The Shield of the Americas, created last March and also known as the Coalition against the Cartels of the Americas, is led by the United States and currently brings together 17 countries, with observers such as Colombia and the Bahamas.

Donald Trump is the driving force behind this alliance in the fight against international organized crime and drug trafficking. This was highlighted during a meeting in New York, held parallel to the one taking place at the UN General Assembly, with the participation of the presidents Javier Milei of Argentina; José Antonio Kast of Chile; Daniel Noboa of Ecuador; Irfaan Ali of Guyana; Nasry Asfura of Honduras; Santiago Peña of Paraguay; Keiko Fujimori of Peru; and Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic. Colombia was represented by its vice president, José Manuel Restrepo.

The current members of the Shield of the Americas are the United States, Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama, and Paraguay. Peru and Trinidad and Tobago are members of the coalition, while the Bahamas and Chile are observers.

The group committed to the fight against drug trafficking through a Joint Security Declaration signed in Doral on March 5 of this year, which defined four major areas of cooperation: “expanding multilateral and bilateral security collaboration; strengthening border security; combating narcoterrorism and illicit trafficking; and protecting critical infrastructure, as well as moving towards a permanent coalition to address shared threats.”

The planned actions include greater military and intelligence coordination among members, considering “information sharing, joint training, border cooperation, and actions against the financial, logistical, and operational structures used by criminal organizations.”

The recent visit to Brazil by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot served to strengthen bilateral cooperation on cross-border security.

During the meeting, both nations signed a roadmap for cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking, environmental crimes, and various criminal organizations that have expanded into French Guiana in recent years.

Regarding this, Barrot stated: “This roadmap will facilitate human and economic exchanges (…) but also strengthen our joint action against all types of crime, especially drug trafficking and environmental crime.”

The measure includes the suspension of visas for Brazilians entering French Guiana, effective July 31, which will aid in the “fight against crime by providing greater registration and information gathering,” according to Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira.
