Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio died this Wednesday after an attack by a group of hitmen during the end of an electoral rally in Quito, the country’s capital, ahead of the elections on August 20.

Villavicencio, a former trade unionist and candidate for the Construye Movement, was transferred to the Women’s Clinic, where his death was confirmed, as reported by his personal friend and campaign adviser, Dr. Carlos Figueroa, in statements reported by the newspaper ‘El Universo’.

Faced with this situation, the President of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, decreed a state of emergency at the national level for 60 days after the assassination of the candidate.

“The Armed Forces are mobilized throughout the national territory to guarantee the security of citizens, the tranquility of the country, the free and democratic elections on August 20, as provided by the National Council of Ecuador (CNE)”, declared the president after an emergency meeting with the Security Cabinet.

The president signed two decrees in which he recognized the “outstanding career as a journalist, writer, social and political activist” of the presidential candidate and has praised his “honesty.” “He is one of the main promoters of investigative processes against acts of corruption at the national level”.
