Regarding the unemployment rate in the country, the FOMC noted slight changes in recent months. The Fed also confirmed that it will maintain ample reserves in the banking system, a strategy to provide liquidity.

However, “the governing body emphasized that the impact of tariffs on prices is still uncertain and that high levels of inflation could be more persistent than expected.”

During the last meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) members of the United States Federal Reserve (Fed), on September 17, they indicated their willingness to lower interest rates again this year, although with some fear that inflation could pick up.

The majority of participants in the meeting indicated that “it would be appropriate to further ease policy during the remainder of the year,” without neglecting the upside risks to their inflation outlook.

In the committee vote, those responsible for national monetary policy voted 11 to 1 for a 25 basis point reduction in interest rates “and leaving them in the range of 4% to 4.25%, the first cut in 2025.”

The results of last month’s meeting on macroeconomic projections left the path is open to “two more quarter-point cuts by the end of the year within their baseline scenario. However, six of the 19 participants projected one cut or none at all.”

The news came amid President Donald Trump’s pressure on the central bank, in addition to the order to fire Fed Governor Lisa Cook.

The U.S. central bank “may consider lowering interest rates at its next meeting on September 16 and 17,” taking into account the upward trend in inflation in the country.

During his speech at the Jackson Hole symposium, Powell made it clear that there is room to lower rates, as Trump has been demanding. However, he stressed that “monetary policy is restrictive. It can be relaxed within the range without ceasing to be restrictive.”

For the time being, tensions remain between the Fed and the White House, amid the decline in job creation and the implementation of Trump’s tariffs.

The information was released in a memo cited last Friday by CNBC, which stated: “Experience, both here and elsewhere, shows that it is healthy for any organization to periodically review its staff and resources. The Federal Reserve has done so occasionally as our work, our priorities, or the external environment have changed.”

The Fed currently has a workforce of 24,000 employees; According to Powell’s announcement, 2,400 employees would be cut through 2027.

According to the note, the Fed chairman instructed that “gradual ways be found to consolidate functions where appropriate, modernize some business practices, and ensure they are adequately sized and can fulfill their statutory mission.”

Voluntary resignation programs, designed to give federal government employees “paid leave before leaving office or retiring,” could be used. These leaves are valid for three months.

Powell stated before participating in an event of the Association for Business Economics Foundation (NABE) in Nashville (Tennessee) that “economic conditions open the way for further moderation of inflation,” adding that the labor market has remained stable.

Regarding interest rates, it is important to remember that the Fed applied a cut during its recent meeting on September 18, for the first time since 2020. This reduction was “half a percentage point, to prevent the labor market from deteriorating too quickly.

The president of the Fed foresees that if the economy evolves globally as they have calculated, “the (monetary) policy will go with the passage of time towards a more neutral orientation; that is, lower rates”.

The project was named Agora. “Seven central banks in total are involved and their goal is to test whether so-called tokenized bank deposits can be used in combination with tokenized central bank currencies (CBDCs) in a faster and more advanced system.”

This pilot will focus on a wholesale CBDC, used only between banks and not by the public, with the aim of solving the “problems posed by different time zones, legal requirements, and regulatory and technical systems.”

On the list of participating banks are major lenders such as JPMorgan, HSBC, UBS and the Japanese MUFG.
