As you may recall, in 2020 the Commission sued Meta, “accusing it of violating antitrust law by acquiring potential emerging rivals such as Instagram and WhatsApp to avoid having to compete with them.”

Judge Boasberg dismissed the case after a seven-week trial, where Mark Zuckerberg, owner of the brand, argued that Meta faces strong competition from YouTube and TikTok.

The argument was accepted by the legal expert, who stated that “TikTok and YouTube prevent Meta from monopolizing the social media market.” He also referred to the changes that have occurred in the social media sector since the Commission filed the case, mentioning the generation of content with AI, which weakened the agency’s arguments.

The ruling in favor of Meta is also a victory for Silicon Valley, “as US regulators increasingly seek to curb the power of Big Tech” such as Google, Apple, and Amazon.
