During the first hearing, both were formally presented before the US justice system, and at the end of the initial session, “the judge in charge of the case established the schedule for the continuation of the process, setting the date for the second appearance.”

It is important to note that both pleaded not guilty during this first hearing to the charges against them in this historic legal process.

It is important to clarify that he is accused of nine charges in a tax criminal case that began in December 2023.

About Hunter Biden, there is an investigation by the Department of Justice into his taxes, and he is accused of “evading at least 1.4 million US dollars in tax payments.”

Although he had pleaded not guilty, “one of his lawyers announced in court on Thursday that Hunter Biden planned to change his plea of innocence before the start of the trial.”

In a reversal of the decision, Joe Biden’s only surviving son “pleaded guilty to misdemeanor and felony charges without the benefits” in a deal with prosecutors hours after jury selection was set to begin.

Under the laws, the charges could carry 17 years in prison, though federal sentencing guidelines are presumed to call for a much shorter sentence, with the hearing scheduled for December 16.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit noted that Trump’s claim of immunity from criminal responsibility for his actions in the White House lacks backing in precedent, history, or the Constitution.

This ruling represents a major legal setback for Trump, 77, who is considered a favorite for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024. A spokesman for the former Republican president announced that they will appeal the decision “to safeguard the Presidency and the Constitution.”

“If a president is not guaranteed immunity, any future ruler will face immediate charges from the opposition party,” said Steven Cheung after hearing the appeal court’s decision. “Without full immunity, a president of the United States could not properly perform his role!” he added.

The appeals court suspended the immunity decision until next Monday, giving Trump the opportunity to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. The latter court decides whether to accept the case or uphold the judgement of the Court of Appeal.

Trump’s trial, scheduled for March 4 for conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election results won by Democrat Joe Biden, was postponed by the district judge in charge of the case, who was awaiting a ruling on the immunity issue by the appeals court.

District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who will preside over Trump’s election interference trial, rejected the immunity claim in December. In the past month, the three judges who heard the appeal were also unconvinced by the arguments presented by Trump.

The lawsuit alleges that both companies “seek to take advantage of the Times’ massive investment in its journalism, using its content to create substitute products without proper permission or compensation.”

As one of the most respected news groups in the United States, The New York Times has opted for a more belligerent approach to the sudden growth of AI chatbots, marking a difference with other media outlets such as Germany’s Axel Springer or the Associated Press (AP) agency, which have closed content deals with OpenAI.

In its lawsuit, The New York Times is seeking compensation for damages, as well as a court order for companies to stop using its content and destroy the data already collected. In addition, the lawsuit highlights the growing debate over copyright in the age of artificial intelligence.

Although a specific amount has not been specified, the Times argues that the alleged violation could have resulted in “billions of dollars in legal and actual damages.”

In response to the AFP consultation, neither OpenAI nor Microsoft commented.

It is worth noting that Microsoft, as a major investor in OpenAI, has implemented AI capabilities in its own products following the launch of ChatGPT last year. The AI models that drive Microsoft’s ChatGPT and Copilot were trained for years with content available on the Internet, under the assumption that it was possible to use them without the need for authorization or compensation to the original sources.

The lawsuit, filed in a federal court in New York, argues that the illegal use of the Times’ work to build AI products constitutes a potential threat and undermines its ability to deliver quality journalism. A Times spokesperson stressed, “These tools have been created and continue to use independent journalism and content that is only available because of us and our colleagues, who report, edit and verify it at great cost and considerable expertise“.

The company, owned by Venezuela, has commitments with various creditors that remain waiting for them to be remunerated.

The auction will have a schedule that could take a year. However, as reported by Reuters, the process will begin on October 23 after the order issued by Judge Leonard Stark in Delaware.

Citgo Petroleum’s creditors include miner Crystallex International, oil producer ConocoPhillips, Siemens Energy and Red Tree Investments. All these companies hope to recover “some USD 2.7 billion recognized by awards and international arbitration courts.”

It is appropriate to remember that the license that protects Citgo was extended until October 19, by the FED, “from the holders of a 2020 bond in default of PDVSA.”

The non-payment of the awards to the creditors prompted those affected to go to the US courts at all. The aforementioned companies are joined by the firms O-I Glass Inc OI.N, Huntington Ingalls Industries HII.N, ACL1 Investments, Rusoro Mining RML.V, Gold Reserve GRZ.V and two units of Koch Industries, which won a case before an appeals court in the United States. This new group of plaintiffs could recover USD 3.460 million.

The setbacks in the possible acquisition of the developer by the Xbox manufacturer have occurred since the news was released, in January 2022, when Sony suggested that, if this purchase took place, its main competitor could exercise a monopoly in the video game sector.

From then on, various international organizations began to study the case to find out what the real consequences of this purchase could be and its impact on other brands, such as the Japanese one.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which is the national consumer protection agency of the United States, filed a lawsuit to block this economic transaction.

This blocking lawsuit will be resolved in a trial scheduled for August 2, but it does not prevent Microsoft and Activision Blizzard, whose contract requires the acquisition to close on July 18, from closing a previous agreement.

To prevent this, this Monday, the FTC asked the US courts to block this agreement between the Xbox manufacturer and the Call Of Duty developer with a temporary restraining order.

Microsoft and Activision Blizzard, for their part, will have until June 16 to present legal arguments against the injunction, while the FTC will have until June 20 to respond.
