Vicente Pérez, leader of the Venezuelan Confederation of Agricultural Producers Associations, urged the government to facilitate export permits for the country’s coffee growers, noting that they are not benefiting from the current price of $440 per quintal.

According to Pérez, who sent greetings to coffee growers on International Coffee Day, facilitating export permits is “key to stabilizing domestic prices during the harvest,” in addition to allowing Venezuela to regain the market niches it had previously conquered.

The leader pointed out that for more than 100 years, coffee growers have organized themselves into cooperatives or associations to export their product. But abandoning these practices harms exports. The current figures, between 100,000 and 120,000 quintals of coffee marketed, are far below the 600,000 quintals that were exported in the past.

Pérez emphasized that despite a situation marked by shortages of inputs and fuel, and price controls, the sector has managed to maintain and even increase production.

He referred to a historic change in vegetable production in just a decade, as Venezuela previously imported around 85 % of its food supply. Currently, domestic production meets 97 % of consumer demand.

Regarding the distribution of produce to the various states, he reiterated that there are delays due to road problems.

The Venezuelan Association of Agrotechnology (AVAT) was created at the initiative of ten companies in the area of ​​technologies applied to the agricultural sector, in order to provide support to producers.

This initiative is possible thanks to the alliance with the association arises in alliance with the Confederation of Associations of Agricultural Producers (Fedeagro), the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Office for Industrial Development (UNIDO). 

Likewise, the AVAC will have the support of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture of the OAS (IICA) and ESRI Venezuela, a geospatial information company.

All those involved have stressed the importance of the application of new technologies for the development of the field and the optimization of the processes involved.

José Augusto Linárez, president of AVAT, indicated that the idea arose “two years ago with several agrotechnology companies” and has become a reality this November 22.

The manager explained that “the network of AVAT members is initially made up of: Siagrica, Agroo, Grupo Intag, Biofarm, Aerohelicópteros, Agrodrones de Venezuela, Sakura, Drone Pixel, Agrocognitive and A4Agro.” These are companies “with platforms in agrotechnology, with experience between 10 and 15 years and with applications made in Venezuela that satisfy the needs of the national agricultural producer.”

According to Linárez, the objective of the association is to “align with national development plans.” And he added that it is essential to increase production, reduce intermediation and increase the use of technology to achieve a decrease in the cost of food.

If the proposed precepts are met, with the use of technologies the sector could increase productivity by 20 % and reduce costs by 30 %. To achieve this, it is “important to encourage the adoption of technology and promote smart agriculture,” added Lináres.
