An API is a ‘software’ module that allows communication between two applications through a set of rules. Its operation depends on the permissions that the API owner grants to third-party developers.

The company has indicated that interested parties will no longer be able to use both versions v2 and v1.1. of the API for free and that, in its place, a basic level of payment will be available from next February 9.

The company has justified this decision in that Twitter data “is among the most powerful data sets in the world”, while “over the years, hundreds of millions of people have sent more than one trillion tweets, and thousands of million more every week.

The company has not specified what will be the fee that those interested in continuing to provide their services through this API will have to pay, and has announced on the social network itself that it will provide more details “next week”.

With this, it has underlined its commitment to “allow quick and complete access” to these developers, with the aim that they can continue building their applications with Twitter.

This isn’t the first time the Twitter API has made headlines, as the platform recently banned its use by third-party clients through an update to its developer agreement.

Some of the affected third-party apps include Talon, Twitterrific, and Tweetbot, which announced the closure of their services through a series of statements.

In his case, the creators of this last client, Tapbots, announced days later the launch of another third-party application called Ivory and intended for Twitter’s main competitor, Mastodon.
