The conservative Friedrich Merz, of the Christian Democratic Union party (CDU) won the elections in Germany held this Sunday, February 23, with a participation in the polls of 84 % of voters, one of the highest since reunification.

The current chancellor of the European nation, the social democrat Olaf Scholz, admitted his defeat to the conservative, representative of the party of the former chancellor Angela Merkel.

“The conservatives’ victory poses a new challenge for Germany’s government, while the far right achieved a historic result at the polls,” local media reported.

The far right of candidate Alice Weidel came second in the election process. Scholz, who came third, declared: “It is a bitter electoral result for the Social Democratic Party, it is also an electoral defeat.”

For his part, the winner of the electoral contest indicated in his first statements that it is vital to start working immediately to form a new government. He will have to talk to potential partners.
