The runoff election to choose the president of Chile will take place on December 14. The candidates in the runoff are leftist Jeannette Jara and far-right José Antonio Kast.

The results of the first round, held on Sunday, November 16, were released this Monday, showing that both candidates obtained 26.7 % and 24.1 % of the vote, respectively. Both candidates will now advance to the runoff.

According to reports, “Jara won the most votes in both the central and southern regions of the country, including Coquimbo, Valparaíso, Aysén, and Magallanes, as well as the Metropolitan Region, which includes the capital. Kast, meanwhile, led the vote in the southern regions, including O’Higgins, Maule, Ñuble, Biobío, La Araucanía, Los Ríos, and Los Lagos.”

Regarding the election, President Gabriel Boric congratulated both candidates and “asked them to engage in a respectful debate leading up to the second round, always keeping in mind what is best for Chile.”
