This change in trade dynamics, according to data from the German statistics office, is mainly due to the crisis generated by the increase in tariffs that hampered German exports to the United States.

“German imports and exports with China totaled 163.4 billion euros (190.7 billion dollars) from January to August, while trade with the US amounted to 162.8 billion euros,” according to Reuters calculations.

Regarding the tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, “they have put downward pressure on German exports to the United States, which fell 7.4 % in the first eight months of the year compared to 2014, to €99.6 billion. In August, exports to the United States fell 23.5 % year-on-year, showing that the trend is accelerating.”

Máximo Colmenares, vice president of Fedeindustria Carabobo, emphasized the potential to expand sales of animal protein, driven by a voracious global demand for healthier and more sustainable options.

Colmenares pointed out that the country has a unique capacity to diversify its protein exports. “Countries in Europe and Asia demand Venezuelan animal protein because of its organic profile. We are eliminating antibiotics and synthetic additives that affect animal and human health,” he added.

Eighty percent of shrimp farming activity is concentrated in the farms around Lake Maracaibo, in Zulia state. This has allowed the country to face challenges such as oil spills and economic volatility, “positioning it among the top 10 global shrimp exporters.”

Through the joint efforts of national authorities and agribusiness associations, key initiatives have been achieved: “from protocols to combat diseases in aquaculture to animal nutrition programs that guarantee contaminant-free products.”

While shrimp is gaining ground in markets in the Netherlands, France, Spain, as well as the Middle East and Russia, domestically “chicken accounts for 70 % of national protein intake, with a stable domestic market despite inflationary pressures.”

In this regard, they have explained that they want to maintain trade with countries like Argentina and Venezuela, whose national currencies are unstable. “A trend that entrepreneurs attribute, in part, to new US government policies favorable to these digital assets.”

One of the companies that is entering this space is Giannone, which “buys batches of used iPhones, certifies their operation, and distributes them to resellers in Latin America.” It has already established contact with the Shield platform, co-founded by a Latin American entrepreneur to “help companies transact in stablecoins, such as USDT, pegged to the value of the US dollar.”

Payments to Jireh Tech Solutions can be made in cryptocurrencies backed by the US dollar, thus “avoiding exchange rate depreciation with the certainty that they comply with the new regulations required by the United States, but with less banking bureaucracy.”

The companies involved point out that the use of cryptocurrencies is an alternative that allows them to grow their client base, in addition to offering them a second option, since what they normally did “was only receive wire transfers (bank transfers) with all clients, and there was no second option for all of them.”

Through the document, the Ecuadorian government reaffirmed its commitment, along with Canada, to move toward signing the trade agreement, which was already negotiated in January 2025.

It is important to remember that on February 2, both nations “closed negotiations for a trade agreement that will facilitate the Andean country’s access to a market of 39.8 million consumers under preferential terms, according to the Presidency.”

The negotiations are expected to strengthen bilateral trade, in addition to creating “new growth opportunities for Ecuadorian producers, exporters, and entrepreneurs.” Key sectors will benefit, such as “floriculture, food, tuna, textiles, auto parts, ceramics, footwear, wood, juices and pulp, cosmetics, plastics, hats, and tagua, among others.”

Ecuador and Canada will also seek job creation and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

Priority will be given to strategies to support the agricultural and family farming sectors, especially in products such as rice, dairy products, corn, sugar, pork, beef, and poultry.

Other crucial aspects of this future agreement will include promoting investment, cultural cooperation and exchanges, and promoting e-commerce, among others.
