The Attorney General of Colombia, Francisco Barbosa, at the time of exercising his right to vote, announced that he will summon the Registrar of Civil Status, Alex Vega, in the coming days to issue his version of the alleged electoral crimes committed by juries, during the presidential elections, which took place in Colombia this Sunday, May 29, 2022.

According to the Attorney General, in the “next few days, investigative advances will be presented regarding possible crimes committed by juries during the 2022 electoral elections (…) and we will call the Registrar to testify so that he can explain to us what are the material evidence that he has and that your office has to determine the fraudulent nature of these actions. And we continue to act with all rigor, to the extent that it is essential for us to preserve democracy and preserve the rule of law in this country.”

Additionally, the Prosecutor recalled that any criminal situation in the Registrar’s Office or witnesses and electoral juries have criminal responsibility and the role of the Prosecutor’s Office is not limited only to presidential elections. On the contrary, it is present throughout the electoral process and will continue throughout the course of the investigations in the event of any punishable act.

Prosecutors verify voting centers

The Attorney General also referred to the role that prosecutors during the electoral process, and especially in the face of complaints made for possible electoral crimes.

Barbosa indicated that some 5,000 prosecutors were deployed throughout the Colombian territory in order to verify the different voting centers, especially in those areas considered high risk.

Prosecutors pay close attention to facts that could affect the democratic process or could represent a risk of electoral corruption.
