Europol arrested ten hackers accused of stealing $ 100 million in cryptocurrencies through a campaign of theft of SIM cards in the United States.

The network of hackers carried out in 2020 a series of attacks on thousands of victims, including Internet ‘influencers’, famous athletes, musicians and their families.

They used the method known as SIM card hijacking, with which they deactivate a SIM card and associate it with another phone number. They usually pose as companies to obtain this information or obtain it from telephone providers.

In this way, they got illegal access to the victims’ phones and used it to access their applications and change the passwords of their accounts, as Europol detailed in a statement.

Using this technique, they managed to steal a total of 100 million dollars in cryptocurrencies from their victims, but also personal information and even took control of their accounts on social networks.

The arrest of the attackers was a joint operation in the United Kingdom, the United States, Belgium, Malta and Canada, coordinated by the European police, and took place after a year-long investigation.

Police forces from different countries disarmed one of the most dangerous cybercrime networks in the world, known as EMOTET.

It operated with botnet-type software, which consists of a computer program that is responsible for infecting the computer network and then controlling them remotely, according to Europol and Eurojust.

Police from Britain, Canada, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Ukraine and the United States worked together to infiltrate EMOTET’s infrastructure.

Through a statement, Europol indicated that the police forces and authorities “this week have disrupted one of the most important botnets of the last decade: EMOTET.”

The network contained several hundred servers that were used to “manage infected victims’ computers, spread to new ones and serve other criminal groups”, Europol said.
