In a surprising victory against cybercrime, Huobi Global’s HTX cryptocurrency exchange has managed to recover funds stolen by a hacker in late September. In this incident, 5,000 ETH, valued at approximately USD 8 million at the time, were compromised and drained from one of HTX’s hot wallets.

However, what really stands out in this case is the unusual way in which Huobi Global recovered the funds and resolved the situation. After establishing contact with the hacker and confirming his identity, HTX opted for an extremely conciliatory solution.

They offered a 5 % reward, equivalent to about $400,000 in Ether, and agreed not to take legal action if 95% of the stolen funds were returned by the October 2 deadline.

At a time when stablecoins in the cryptocurrency world have faced considerable challenges over the past eighteen months, this successful resolution stands out as a ray of hope in the industry.

According to data provided by DeFiLlama, a crypto data provider, the total market capitalization of these digital assets has seen a 35 % drop, especially following the collapse of Terraform and its native stablecoin last year.

The stable cryptocurrencies linked to the euro occupy the second segment of the market, but their value is quite low, barely reaching 500 million euros, according to figures from the European Central Bank (ECB), which represents 0.2 % of the total of the stable cryptocurrency market.

According to ECB figures, this type of currency is at its best, although according to analysts the market is still “in its infancy”.

Cryptocurrencies linked to the euro

The euro-pegged stablecoin market is dominated by two major coins, the euro Tether and Stasis, which together account for half of the total.

In the last two years, this market has experienced significant growth, reaching a value of 160,000 million dollars in 2021, according to figures from the ECB’s Annual Report on the international use of the euro.

The report also refers to the international role of the euro that contributed to the popularity of stablecoins and founded the possibility of greater regulation of this type of cryptocurrency in the Eurozone.

The companu Yuga Labs, creator of the non-fungible tokens (NFT) Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) and the OtherSide metaverse, was the victim of a new cyberattack, the second in two months, which stole several collectibles valued at 200 ethers (ETH), equivalent to about 350,000 dollars.

The hack was carried out through the BAYC servers on Discord and was detected by the Onchain analyst, OKHotshot, who made the notification on the social network Twitter. In the first tweet, he noted: “BAYC and OtherSide Discord accounts were compromised”.

The cyberattackers sent a publication accompanied by a phishing, which consists of the online impersonation of an authority, company, website or even someone. In this case, it led to a fake website where the theft of NFTs occurs.

In their message the attackers said: “We are launching another exclusive giveaway for all BAYC, MAYC and Otherside NFT owners. Since Otherside was one of our biggest successes, both for our team and for all our holders who currently own one, we decided to throw one last gift to the holders as a token of our appreciation.”

Second attack in two months

The company acknowledged the cyberattack on its servers and indicated that the work team detected the hack and quickly addressed it, but “about 200 ETH in NFT were affected, and I invite its users to report any alteration via email to  discord@yugalabs.io“.

The company also admitted that it is the second time, in two months, that it has been the victim of a cyberattack. The first occurred last April when BAYC’s official Instagram account was hacked, where they posted a malicious link and 91 digital pieces were lost.

This second attack was similar to the one in April, when they also sent a phishing, which led to a fake BAYC website, where an airdrop was promised and users were asked to sign a transaction after which all their assets were transferred to a wallet controlled by the attacker.”

The new cryptocurrency project is called “SHIB: The Metaverse”, which will have 100,595 lands. Developers decided to accept ETH as the purchase currency instead of using their own token SHIBA.

The land will be sold in NFT plots and by delivery phases. The introductory phase, considered the first one, will consist of 36,431 lands and they were divided into four categories: Silver Fur, Gold Tail, Platinum Paw and Diamond Teeth with a value ranging between 0.2 ETH and 1 ETH.

In an official statement, the developers explained that among the reasons for adopting ETH they highlight, firstly, the neutrality of the currency, which is “better for establishing land prices” and secondly, it highlights security because that way risks of devaluation of your Shiba Inu token will be avoided.

The statement notes that “using our ecosystem tokens is a risk as we would have to get rid of the price of our own tokens to cash them in and that is a long way from our plans.”

The beneficiaries who have the NFTs in the SHIBA world will enjoy some advantages such as obtaining passive income, pooling resources in the game and creating rewards.

Criticism to SHIB: The Metaverse

Billy Markus, co-founder of Dogecoin (DOGE), expressed his disagreement with the new project, through the social network Twitter. He said: “I mean, anyway, if people want to give developers even more money, go ahead, but if I were a SHIB holder, I’d be upset.”

Other personalities in the crypto environment have also criticized the SHIB: The Metaverse project for not generating “much utility for Shiba Inu token holders.” Nonetheless, the price of the tokens held up, motivating Shiba supporters and investors.

The main token saw a slight increase of 6.36 % daily to settle at $0.00002723. In the last week the price of Shiba Inu has increased by 11.52 %.

March 12, 2020, is remembered as the “Black Thursday” in the ecosystem due to the losses caused to the crypto assets of the world. However, after that date the market has experienced monumental growth, transforming 2021 in an amazing year for Bitcoin, Ether and many other digital assets.

Among the cryptocurrencies that have reached a greater growth during the last twelve months is, at first place, Game Stars (GST), which a year ago was valued at $ 0.40 and currently registers an increase of 41,882 %. It is followed by MIR (MIR) that was quoted at 3.73 dollars and has increased by 41.462% in one year.

Dogecoin (Doge) is in third place. It increased by 7.730 %, currently “each token is negotiated today at $ 0.283″, and is considered one of the most valuable digital currencies in terms of market capitalization.”
