The European Commission and the Council have decided to prohibit the use of the TikTok application on the corporate mobiles of its employees and on personal devices that have access to services such as email as a protection measure against cybersecurity actions and threats.

According to a spokesperson for the Commission, employees will have until March 15 to remove the application from their corporate devices, although it has not offered guidelines on its use on personal devices beyond those linked to work purposes.

After the announcement in Brussels, Council sources have confirmed that they also joined the application of this preventive measure in “close collaboration” with the other institutions of the European Union (EU).

The decision was made due to the fear that third parties could exploit the application to carry out cyberattacks against the corporate environment of the Commission, which has advanced that it will also examine other social networks.

The European Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services, Thierry Breton, pointed out at a press conference that the institution is “extremely active to ensure the protection of its colleagues” and has justified that there were “some reasons” for taking this precaution.

European Commission applies cybersecurity measures

The measure is in line with the Commission’s strict internal cybersecurity policies applicable to the use of mobile devices in work-related communications.

In addition, it complements the recommendations that the Commission has been making for a long time to its staff to apply best practices when using social media platforms and to maintain a high level of awareness in their daily work.

The Commission has detailed that this suspension is an internal corporate decision that is strictly limited to the use of devices affiliated with its mobile service.
