An agreement has been signed within the European Union, which will be presented in early 2026, to stop importing Russian natural gas starting on December 31 of that year.

Furthermore, member states are committed to halting the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by pipeline from September 30, 2027.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen referred to the agreement as a historic milestone. “The idea is to extend this decision to oil with a similar timeline,” she added.

Although Brussels will present the legislative proposal early next year, “the agreement must be approved by the European Parliament and ratified by a majority of member states.” The measure, agreed upon after negotiations that concluded in the early hours of Wednesday morning, seeks to sever ties with what was once the continent’s leading energy supplier (with 45 %) before the invasion of Ukraine. Today, it still accounts for 13 % of imports.

The truth is that the countries of the region want to stop imports of Russian gas once and for all. According to Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen, “Europe has opted for energy security and independence. We will never return to volatile supply or market manipulation.”

To replace this important commodity, the EU has increased imports from the US and the Middle East.
