This was stated by the CEO of EA, Andrew Wilson, in statements during the presentation of the latest economic results of the study, for the second quarter of fiscal year 2022, as recorded in the transcript of the meeting.

During the presentation of results, Wilson was asked about new technologies such as non-fungible tokens or “play to earn”, a ‘play to win’ video game model that financially rewards each user who adds value by playing and spending time in gaming ecosystem.

Wilson said that “the conversation about play to earn and NFT is still very, very early”, but that it is a highly debated topic. The executive also acknowledged that there is “a lot of expectation in this regard.”

“I think it will be an important part of the future of our industry”, the CEO of EA went on to affirm, although he estimates that “it is still too early to find out how it will work.”

The executive has also made his own predictions about the future of tokens in video games. “I believe that in the context of the games we create and the live services we offer, collectible digital content is going to play a significant role in our future.”

FIFA 22 hit the market on September 26, and since then 9.1 million players have joined the game, 7.6 million Ultimate Team squads have been created and 460 million games played, as indicated the company in a statement.

EA, however, is already looking to the future of the franchise, which is sustained by the ecosystem of signed agreements and licenses, and which allows it to offer “unrivaled authenticity” in all EA SPORTS football games.

Currently, they indicate, it is the only soccer franchise that brings together the main leagues in the world: UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, CONMEBOL Libertadores, Premier League, Bundesliga and LaLiga Santander, among others.

But the company said EA SPORTS football, which is primarily identified as FIFA, could change its name. “We are exploring the idea of renaming our global games EA SPORTS soccer. This means that we are reviewing our naming rights agreements with FIFA, which is separate from all of our other official agreements and licenses in the world of soccer.”

Netflix plans to expand the content of its catalog next year with a video game offering, a new area for which it has hired Mike Verdu, a veteran executive in the sector who previously worked at Electronic Arts and Facebook.

The incorporation of Verdu marks the beginning of a new area for the streaming platform. As vice president of video game development he will help the company to form a new team in the coming months, for which Netflix has already begun to offer jobs on their website.

The game development strategy is not yet defined, according to a source familiar with the matter, but the company hopes to be able to offer video games next year along with the films, series and documentaries that it already has in its catalog.

This new content would not entail an additional charge, according to the source, which would allow it to differentiate itself from Apple, which also has a service for original video content (Apple TV+) and another for video games (Apple Arcade), which charges separately.

It would not be Netflix’s first foray into the world of video games. Some of its series, such as Stranger Things, have an official video game, while others of its content (Black Mirror or Carmen Sandiego) have a format that resembles a game.

FIFA 21 Ultimate Team is in the crosshairs of the gambling regulatory authorities, and now also of EA itself after the scandal known as ‘EAGate’, by which users of the sports simulation title denounce that workers of the developer sell the cards privately.

The Ultimate Team mode offers FIFA players the opportunity to create and upgrade their team of footballers by acquiring cards for real money. Players who appear on the cards using a random system and those who perform better are less likely to appear.

Already last year the Netherlands Gaming Authority denounced “the fact that footballers sometimes have a high value and that sometimes they can be traded”. This body filed an administrative order subject to a penalty of up to 5 million euros to EA for the loot boxes.

Complaints against EA Sports FIFA employees selling rare cards and custom packs have proliferated on social media. On Twitter, supposed conversations have been shared with an employee, who offers packs of players for prices ranging between 750 and a thousand euros.

The objective of the purchase of Glu by Electronic Arts is to accelerate the growth of the mobile games business. “Mobile devices continue to grow as the world’s largest gaming platform, and with the addition of Glu games and talent, we doubled the size of our mobile business.”

Glu Mobile is known for its games as a service with titles such as ‘Disney Sorcerer’s Arena’, ‘Dinner Dash Adventures’, ‘Kim Kardashian: Hollywood’ or ‘Cooking Dash’. For its part, Electronic Arts has famous games like ‘FIFA’, ‘NBA’, ‘Battlefield’, ‘The Sims’ or ‘Plants against Zombies’.

With the acquisition of Glu for $ 2.1 billion in company value, Electronic Arts expands its mobile game offering with more than 15 titles that, combined, generated $ 1.32 billion in transactions in the last twelve months.

In addition, following the purchase of Glu, EA will add 500 mobile game developers to its team, and about 800 employees in total. According to Electronic Arts, the combination of both companies, with a broad portfolio of games and an expanding global audience, will deliver “more exciting experiences for gamers” from a rapidly growing platform.
