In a surprising victory in the presidential elections held this Sunday, millionaire businessman Daniel Noboa became the youngest president in the history of Ecuador at 35 years old. Ecuador, a country affected by drug trafficking violence, saw Noboa win the runoff with 52 % support, defeating Luisa González, who obtained 48 % of the votes and was supported by former socialist president Rafael Correa (2007-2017). ).

Noboa’s victory was greeted with enthusiasm by Ecuadorians, who celebrated in the streets of Quito with fireworks and car horns. This election represents one of the biggest setbacks for the Correísta movement, which has lost for the second consecutive time in a presidential election after years of popularity.

“Tomorrow we begin to work for this new Ecuador, to rebuild a country that has been seriously hit by violence, corruption and hatred,” declared the president-elect from his residence in Olón, located in the southwest of the country.

Despite being a newcomer to politics until a few months ago, Noboa promised to strive to “restore peace” to the country.

Luisa González accepted his defeat and congratulated the new president, who won the support of right-wing forces, despite defining himself as center-left.

Although election day passed without serious incidents, both Noboa and González voted wearing bulletproof vests and were surrounded by armed guards. The main concern of both candidates and the population in general is to end the growing violence in Ecuador, a country of 16.9 million inhabitants.

In recent years, Ecuador has become a center of operations for drug cartels with international connections, resulting in a reign of terror and thousands of fatalities.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) confirmed Noboa’s victory and reported a participation of 82.33 % of the 13.4 million Ecuadorians called to vote in this mandatory election.

To guarantee security, approximately 100,000 military and police were deployed throughout the country during the electoral process.
