The President of Panama, José Raúl Mulino, referred to the closure of the Darién gap crossing as “mission accomplished” and reiterated the drop in the flow of migrants through this region.

Mulino explained in his weekly press conference on Thursday, April 24, that so far this month only “73 migrants have crossed the Darién River on their way to North America, compared to 194 who had done so in March, or 29,259 who did so in April of last year, which represents a 99.7 % drop compared to 2024.”

He referred to the closure of the Darién as part of Panama’s migration policy, “a policy that has been implemented with great effort.” According to official data, 2,904 migrants have crossed the area so far in 2025, “compared to more than 126,000 during the same period last year.”

Regarding the reverse flow—that is, those who return due to US immigration measures—Mulino indicated that the figure is 7,757: “2,319 so far in April, compared to 2,804 in March.”
