The president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Duarte Pacheco, and his team arrived in Venezuela, this Monday, August 23, in order to hold various meetings with representatives of the national executive and representatives of the Venezuelan opposition in order to inquire about the socio-political reality of the country.

The delegation also includes the president of the Human Rights Committee of parliamentarians Nassirou Bako-Arifari, as well as Samuel Cogolati and Esther Anyakun Davinia, members of the Executive Committee.

During the visit, the parliamentarians also plan to hold a meeting with the directors of the National Electoral Council, the Moral Power and deputies of the National Assembly.

The National Government indicated that the representatives of the Inter-Parliamentary Union will meet “with the Venezuelan group before the UIP, in addition to the special commission for dialogue, peace and reconciliation of the National Assembly elected in 2020.” On the other hand, a meeting with Juan Guaidó and the Deputies of the Delegate Commission of the National Assembly elected in 2015 is also on the agenda.

Last April the Government of Nicolás Maduro extended an invitation to the parliamentary group to visit the country and “learn the truth about Venezuela (…), and learn about the work for peace and reconciliation that the new NA has undertaken,” indicated Jorge Rodríguez

However, in June, Delsa Solórzano stated, through his Twitter account, that the Government denied entry to an IPU commission that came to the country in order to verify “the violation of human rights of the parliamentarians elected in 2015 (…). Maduro fears human rights organizations and therefore denies the entry og IPU to Venezuela.”

According to what Solórzano pointed out at that time, the Inter-Parliamentary Union is investigating more than 140 complaints, among which stand out the “arbitrary detentions, torture and illegal disqualifications of which parliamentarians have been victims”.
