Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the United Nations International Telecommunication Union (ITU), recently stated that in light of the dangers of fragmentation in the use of AI and its consequences for deepening inequalities, global regulation is essential.

The official told AFP that she “hopes that AI can truly benefit humanity.” To achieve this, it is urgent to consider “the risks posed by this rapidly evolving technology—including the fear of job loss, the spread of fake news and misinformation, and the deterioration of the social fabric—and she insisted that regulation is key.”

Her warning comes after US President Donald Trump presented an “aggressive, low-regulation strategy to ensure the United States has an advantage over China in AI.”

The United Nations must analyze the positions of various countries and companies on AI, its development, application, and regulation to establish measures that, far from slowing its progress, optimize its application and minimize risks.

“For Bogdan-Martin, it is key to have a dialogue between these different strategies,” bridging the gaps between countries.
