The United States Bureau of Engraving will work jointly with the Federal Reserve and the Advanced Counterfeiting Deterrence Steering Committee (ACD) on the redesign of its $10, $20, $50 and $100 bills.

Although it is a change that will begin in at least two years, the measure is already announced as a way to reduce counterfeiting of paper money to a minimum.

In the case of the $20 bill, the redesign plan is scheduled to begin in 2026.

“The authorities have already announced that they will begin with the redesign of the USD 10 bill, they will continue with the USD 50 bill and, now, the USD 20 bill will be affected, which will change the way the markets operate. Likewise, it could modify the current use of ATMs.”

In the case of the $20 bill, it has been reported that its size will be reduced by 30 % and that the change would be implemented in 2032, according to the Fed, once the $10 bill enters circulation in 2026 and the $50 bill in 2028.

It is important to add that after the issuance of “the new designs in 2026, 2028 and 2030, it is estimated that the new USD 5 bills will be issued in 2032 and 2035. This nomination is also one of the most used.”

The redesign of the monetary pieces points to the possible elimination of certain symbols to include new ones; also an intensification of serial bands and codes.
