The former president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, will appear before the authorities on March 4 for the beginning of the oral trial against him. He is accused of rebellion, disturbance of public tranquility and abuse of authority, among other crimes.

The country’s Attorney General’s Office is requesting 34 years of prison for him. It is known that along with Castillo, Betssy Chávez, Aníbal Torres and other former officials will also be prosecuted.

The Judicial Branch of Peru has scheduled the oral trial against Castillo for 9:00 a.m. on March 4. Three years and six months of disqualification will be requested, as well as the payment of civil compensation of more than 65 million soles in favor of the State. “For the other defendants, sentences of between 15 and 25 years in prison have been requested.”

It will be a public hearing, conducted by the Special Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court, made up of judges José Antonio Neyra Flores, Iván Salomón Guerrero López and Norma Beatriz Carbajal Chávez.

“The judicial process against Castillo and the other defendants will be essential to clarify the events that occurred on December 7, 2022, when the former president announced the unconstitutional dissolution of Congress and the establishment of an emergency government.”
