The European Union will allow minors under 17 to drive within their own country, provided they are accompanied by an adult.

The political agreement reached this Tuesday by the European Parliament and the Council seeks the creation of a digital driving licence for minors over this age. “The new regulations also lower the minimum age for obtaining a truck licence from 21 to 18. For buses, the minimum age is also lowered from 24 to 21, provided they have a certificate of professional competence.”

In this last segment, the community seeks to facilitate young people’s access to the driving profession given the shortage of personnel in this field.

The lowering of the driving license age does not come without restrictions, as there is already talk of tightening the requirements for the medical examinations drivers must undergo, “which will include an eye and cardiovascular check. In the case of car and motorcycle drivers, however, governments may choose to replace medical examinations with self-assessments and alternative measures for license renewal.”

On the other hand, regulations for novice drivers are also being tightened. In the first two years, fines for driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs, as well as not wearing a seatbelt, will be higher.

Regarding licenses, EU governments will have until 2030 to include them in a digital wallet on a smartphone, although it will be possible to apply for a physical permit, recognized in all countries in the region.
