UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson ruled out sidelining Chinese investments despite differences between London and Beijing regarding human rights and the situation in Hong Kong.

Ahead of the London Global Investment Summit, Johnson stressed that China will continue to occupy a “huge part” of UK economic life for years to come.

However, he indicated that Downing Street will not be “naive” in allowing China access to the UK’s “vital” national infrastructure, such as the 5G telecommunications network or its nuclear capacity.

“I am not going to say that the British government is going to withdraw from every investment with China. It is a giant part of our economy,” the prime minister added.

Johnson thus stressed the importance of acting with “caution” when dealing with these “foreign direct investments” by the Asian giant. “That is why we have put forward legislation in this regard,” he said.

His comments come after China expressed its criticism of the defense pact reached by the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom, known as AUKUS.
