The European Union hopes to have the new design of the euro ready before the end of 2026. In this process of change, which has already begun, the European Central Bank (ECB) launched a competition to the public for submissions of ideas.

It was learned that “the Governing Council has already selected two possible themes for future euro banknotes after consulting experts and the public: one is European Culture, focusing on the common cultural heritage and famous Europeans, and the other, Rivers and Birds, which celebrates the resilience and diversity of Europe’s natural ecosystems. In January, the Governing Council also selected the motifs to illustrate the two possible themes.”

The call is open to graphic designers residing in the European Union and consists of two phases: the first is the application, which closes on August 18, and the second is the design proposal phase.

According to the ECB, in the first phase, applicants must meet specific requirements for the competition, which includes an assessment of their qualifications and achievements. Once selected, the graphic designers will be invited to participate in the second phase and submit their proposals. The competition jury, composed of independent experts, will evaluate the proposals and select a maximum of five per theme.

Regarding the process for the new euro banknotes, ECB President Christine Lagarde said: “The euro is more than a currency: it symbolizes European unity and diversity. With this competition, we invite designers from across Europe to envision the future of our banknotes to reflect our shared cultural identity and natural heritage.”

Once the competition is over, citizens will be able to give their opinion on the selected designs. The Governing Council is expected to make a final decision before the end of 2026. Production of the banknotes must then begin, and their entry into circulation may take a few years.

Attorneys general from the states of California, Florida and Kentucky in the USA joined forces to investigate the potential effect of the social network TikTok on the mental and physical health of young people. The objective of the study is to determine whether the way in which the company “designs, operates and markets its platform has a negative effect on the health of children, adolescents and young adults.”

The group of prosecutors is focusing the investigation on the methods and techniques used by the social network. The algorithm used by TikTok allows establishing the type of content that is exposed to users “and is very effective in keeping them interested”

The representatives of the company have explained on other occasions the operation of the social network. However, prosecutors want to delve into the methods and techniques used to “boost the participation of its users, as well as the length of time they usually spend on the platform.”

TikTok’s reaction to the lawsuits

It is not the first time that the social network has faced an investigation or lawsuit. In 2019 the company had to pay 5.7 million dollars to the FTC to solve the accusations that its “predecessor: Musical.ly.” A platform that was denounced because it did not have the necessary permissions from “the parents of young children who had signed up to use the app.”

Additionally, that agreement intended that TikTok also limit the way in which users “under the age of 13 interact with the content of the application”. Recently, another group of researchers expressed concern about the “few studies that had been carried out on the possible impact of the platform on mental health.”

Ben Rathe, a spokesman for the social network TikTok, expressed his opinion about the investigation being carried out by the attorneys general and indicated that his company “appreciates that the state attorneys general focus on the safety of younger users.” And he noted that the company hopes to provide all the “information about the many security and privacy protections they have for teens.”

The prosecutors’ investigation has other companies responsible for other social networks on the lookout because both Meta and Snapchat are modeling inspiration on TikTok in order to improve or develop their applications.

Google has unveiled a new integrated view design for its Gmail email service, making it easier to access other tools. It will be launched from February and will gradually extend until the end of the second quarter, when it will be mandatory for all users.

The new integrated design of Gmail provides unified access from the mail service also to Workspace services such as Meet video calls and Chat messaging, as reported by Google in a statement.

This integrated view means that users don’t have to switch tabs or open a new window in Gmail when they want to join meetings or search for important conversations.

The American company has shared its plans for the launch of the new unified view of Gmail, which will begin on February 8, when users who wish to can start testing the design if they accept a notification that will appear in their emails.

Among its features, it has bubbles for notifications. Entering Google Chat shows a complete list of conversations and Spaces from a single screen. It also lets you see your mail inbox and labels from the main Gmail screen.

This design will continue to be developed in the coming months. Google plans to make it possible to search Chat conversations from the inbox search bar, something that until now required opening Chat.

In April, all users will begin to receive the new design by default in the mail service, although they will be able to return to the previous one through the Gmail settings.
