The United States government is reportedly considering restrictions or even banning the import of Chinese drones and heavy-duty vehicles due to national security concerns.

The Trump administration previously launched a crackdown on cars and trucks, citing national security concerns. Now, the Department of Commerce has outlined plans to “issue regulations as early as this month to address national security risks related to information and communications technologies critical to drones and their supply chain, as well as vehicles over 10,000 pounds from countries like China and other foreign adversaries.”

It’s important to note that imports from the Asian country “represent the vast majority of commercial drone sales in the United States. More than half come from DJI, the world’s largest drone manufacturer.”

The new restrictive measures related to drones and heavy vehicles from China are in addition to others already planned for imports of cars and other trucks.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Thursday, November 7, that the city will have the first semiconductor research center, called the NanoTech Complex.

The measure is part of the CHIPS and Science Act, approved in 2022, which aims to “improve the technological competitiveness of the United States against China and includes more than $52 billion in incentives for domestic semiconductor production.”

The NanoTech center will be located in the state capital, Albany, and will become a center specialized in “extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology research and development and will be eligible for up to $825 million in federal funding,” Hochul said.

It is the first of three research centers that will make up the federal consortium of the National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC).

The Department of Commerce has indicated that it expects the center to begin operations in 2025, following the preliminary agreement, which will allow them to accelerate the mass production of smaller and faster microchips.

The United States Department of Commerce formally rescinded the restrictions that were applied on TikTok and WeChat and that prevented companies and citizens of the country from making transactions with these companies, thus undoing one of the last measures that were approved during the term of Donald Trump.

As reported by the Department in a statement sent to the Federal Register, the US BOE, this new decision thus complies with the executive order approved by President Joe Biden on June 9.

The new regulatory framework approved by the current Administration of the country replaces the three executive orders that Trump signed to prohibit the use of these social networks, in addition to other Chinese communication and finance applications. The orders approved by Biden are more general and are based on a series of criteria, rather than being directed to specific applications or companies.

The White House stressed two weeks ago that the Biden Administration “is committed to promoting a secure, reliable, interoperable and open Internet, protecting human rights online and offline, and supporting the vibrant global digital economy.”

Thus, the executive order approved by the president incorporates a “rigorous” decision framework and in accordance with a series of criteria and facts to tackle any risk posed by the applications of software for the country’s telecommunications.

TikTok was never effectively banned in the United States because Justice allowed it to continue operating until it was determined whether the rule approved by Trump was in line with the law or not.
