What are some strategies you use to ensure patients understand the procedures and feel comfortable?

The most important thing is to use clear, accessible language when explaining the diagnosis and treatment plan. Detailing a root canal treatment without using images is practically impossible, that is why I always explain with the support of x-rays, images extracted from the previous tomography, clinical photographs of the tooth to be treated and sometimes, I can draw a sketch of the procedure to be performed to visually show What are we going to do or what treatment options exist. While I realize that not all patients want a lengthy explanation, I always try to take the time to discuss their specific concerns so that they feel fully informed and comfortable.

Our patients are the most important thing to us, we are here to serve them, and we must convey that idea. For this, empathy is essential. Each patient has different levels of previous dental experience, fears, expectations, and stories from their friends and family. The idea is to better understand your concerns and adapt my approach to address your individual needs. Listening to the patient helps me establish a real and meaningful connection, which improves collaboration and overall satisfaction with the treatment, highlights the specialist and professor.

What happens after a root canal treatment?

In fact, it is very common to hear our patients say that the tooth that we must portray does not bother them, but almost nothing bothers them. It escapes in a good CT scan and if it has failed, we must re-portray it or look for other treatment alternatives. That’s why we always reevaluate cases once a year, in the same way we diagnosed them, with a CT scan.

There is a lot of talk these days on social media about root canal treatments not working. What can you tell us about that?

If you are referring to poorly performed root canal treatments, you are right, certainly if they are poorly performed, they will not work. On the contrary, if the aseptic chain is followed, working with the proper instruments and equipment, disinfecting the root canal system in the correct way, and sealing and restoring it in the appropriate manner, root canal treatment is a highly successful procedure in almost 100% of the cases, and this allows you to keep your tooth in your mouth, maintaining your chewing function and your oral health. Performing proper root canal treatment is not impossible, but it requires education, training, equipment, good planning, and experience.

So what’s all the fuss about root canal treatments?

All dentists learn to perform root canal treatments in their undergraduate studies, we prepare them at the university to solve simple cases, of very low complexity; The problem begins when the clinician does not know his limitations. Every day we see and evaluate failures of root canal treatments, with very poor procedures, that do not meet the minimum conditions for them to have been restored, and in the majority of these situations, the treatments have been performed by dentists who have not been prepared to perform these procedures, and the patients were not aware of that.
