This is how the president referred this Sunday, August 3, to the “express procedure, the Congress, dominated by the ruling party,” through which last Thursday a constitutional reform was approved that allows indefinite reelection, extends the term from five to six years, and eliminates the second round of elections.”

Bukele faced criticism regarding the reforms, which quickly flooded social media. Organizations such as “Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch (HRW), and the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA) considered the decision a death blow to democracy and a manipulation of the Constitution to favor Bukele’s ambitions for power.”

The Salvadoran president, for his part, steers clear of comments that define him as a dictator. He currently enjoys great popularity for his fight against gangs, which has reduced violence in the country to historic lows.

While in the European autumn of 2021 almost a third of those interviewed stated that they had less or little confidence in German democracy, this summer more than half of Germans (54 %) agreed with this statement.

The loss of confidence of citizens in political parties is even more dramatic. In 2020, 29 % of Germans said they trusted the parties, while a year later the figure dropped to 20 %. Now the nadir has been reached, as barely 9 % of respondents expressed confidence in political parties.

Some 1,113 adults participated in the survey carried out between June and July of this year by the consultancy policy matters, at the request of the Körber Foundation. Nearly 90% affirmed in the survey that life in freedom, equality before the law, the right to freedom of expression and free and secret elections are important to them.

At the same time, 71 % considered that the leaders and the media live in their own world, far from the rest of the population. Meanwhile, almost half of Germans (46%) considered that the country is not very fair or not at all fair.

According to the survey, 86 % of the citizens of Germany would like to be more involved in important decisions. This applies above all to the municipal (93%) and regional (91 %) spheres. However, the Germans also considered a greater participation at the federal level (85%) important. At the same time, more than half of those surveyed responded affirmatively to whether politicians “who have more power and will to assert themselves in order to make decisions quickly and firmly” are needed to solve problems.

The director of the department of democracy, commitment and cohesion of the Körber Foundation, Sven Tetzlaff, considered that the results indicate that the confidence of the Germans in democracy and its institutions is on a slippery slope. “This is a worrying development, along with the economic concerns of citizens,” he said.

Tetzlaff pointed out that half of those surveyed questioned whether the country is prepared to carry out the transformation tasks. “This significantly slows down people’s willingness to change to face big challenges,” the expert said.

The day before, when it was Independence Day for the United States, the Venezuelan government sent a statement congratulating the Americans on this milestone in their history.

In the text, the Foreign Ministry recalled that the peoples of both nations “have been linked by shared struggles and common aspirations for a life with guarantees of happiness and dignity,” for which it stressed that Venezuelans will always express their solidarity with the Americans.

In addition, he encouraged the United States to have “political will” to resume the path of “mutual respect”, diplomacy and “peaceful coexistence”; just what Nicolás Maduro seeks to do.

The declaration reflects the intention of the leaders to delve into strategic and critical issues in Latin America such as social justice, sustainable development, climate change, the defense of sovereignty, integration, among others.

Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Uruguay, Suriname, Venezuela and Peru must name their delegates to present their integration proposals in the next four months.

Among the challenges they seek to face are threats to peace, the climate issue, the geopolitics of the region, food and energy issues, new pandemics, as well as political and institutional stability and democracy.

To channel the proposals, some leaders propose the return of Unasur, as a mechanism for dialogue and political agreement. However, the proposal does not have full support in the region.

“They placed their trust in our hands so that tomorrow we can be better and we will be better. We are all morally obliged to play a role in the place that touches us, only then can we successfully face poverty, corruption and impunity”, stressed the new president.

Peña, who surpassed his main rival, Efraín Alegre, by more than 15 percentage points, who has achieved the support of 27 % of the electorate, thanked the people for trusting in his “conciliatory and patriotic” project, as well as the politicians who They have accompanied, with special mention to the head of his campaign, former President Horacio Cartes, who is under investigation for corruption.

“Horacio, I admire the immensity of your qualified obstinacy for the fate of the Colorado Party. That time, rescuing it from the plain, this time uniting the Colorado family, strengthening their fronts and refunding the concept of a party at the service of the free man“, he declared. in his speech after the electoral victory.

On the other hand, Peña highlighted the three axes with which he is committed to his mandate: social peace, dialogue and reconciliation with the authorities, while acknowledging that he has a great challenge in terms of the country’s economy and security.

“I call for unity and consensus to achieve our destiny of collective well-being and prosperity without exclusions. The time has come to postpone our differences to prioritize the common causes that unite us as a nation,” he said.
