According to this union, the proposal recently presented by Claudia Sheinbaum’s government will help reduce the job insecurity of more than 658,000 digital platform employees.

Sergio Guerrero, UNTA’s general secretary, stressed that the reform of the Federal Labor Law will allow progress towards social coverage for workers and the recognition of their labor rights, social security, and the implementation of legislative improvements, among other benefits.

This type of work is a reality in other countries, where those who work as delivery people or make transfers await their formal inclusion in the laws to obtain the corresponding benefits and protection.

Initially, it was made official through a new ruling that authorized Ipostel to regulate said service, by requesting a registry of all companies, provision of customer and transaction data, as well as charging “1% in all orders and shipments that are completed through digital applications.”

However, through a tweet on the social network, Freddy Ñáñez announced that the measure is without effect. According to his words, the decision was made in a meeting on February 26 with the companies that offer the delivery service.

Ñáñez declared that the meeting was “cordial and fruitful” and that they will work on a joint strategy in the area.

“The decision to reject the regulation of the service was welcomed by companies in the sector,” according to the minister. In addition, he explained that they have already agreed on the creation of “work and security tables with the State, which will link the Peace Quadrants with the delivery providers.”

This move has been a long-awaited demand by couriers, known as “deliveristas,” who have been pushing for this change for months.

The new rule, which will benefit approximately 60,000 people in the city, states that the wage will increase to $19.96 per hour starting April 1, 2025. Although this figure is lower than the original proposal of $23.82 per hour for those drivers who use their own transportation, it continues to be significant progress.

Today, numerous delivery men, mostly of Latin American origin, gathered at the City Hall to celebrate this measure, enthusiastically chanting “Yes, it was possible!”.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams stressed that this new minimum wage will ensure that delivery drivers and their families can earn a living, access greater economic stability and contribute to the continued success of the restaurant industry in the city. During a press conference, Adams expressed his satisfaction with the approval of this standard.

The Workers Justice/Proyecto Justicia Laboral group, one of the main promoters of this law and representative of the deliverists in the city, also celebrated this achievement. Through its official Twitter account, the organization stated: “We have done it. Our fight has always been for the benefit of the people who keep New York City running. We have been victorious and we will continue to organize with love. This It’s just the beginning, the fight continues.”
