The Venezuelan government decided to implement power outages due to the effects of the Super Niño phenomenon. Business owners indicate that the measure is generating losses in the millions and decreasing production, so they are demanding investment to recover the national electrical system.

With power rationing, companies lose almost half of their operating hours, according to trade associations throughout the country. In cases of unscheduled power outages in states like Zulia, Sucre, and Anzoátegui, businesses are forced to use their own generators and obtain the fuel to operate them.

In this regard, Miguel Amendolara, president of the Cumaná Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Production, believes the situation is forcing businesses to incur additional costs.

The loss of productive hours is estimated at 15. In the Paria Peninsula area alone, this figure is calculated at 35 hours per week. “The region would lose up to 140 hours of production per month, which directly impacts businesses and employees.”

Almendrola points out that power outages are unpredictable, making planning impossible. “What economic sector can evolve, grow, or develop without energy? None. Nowhere in the world does a city progress without electricity. Our productive sector cannot withstand another power interruption; it’s unsustainable.”

Small businesses suffer the greatest impact, since their payment methods rely on point-of-sale terminals, which are disconnected during power outages, not to mention the damage to merchandise requiring refrigeration.
