The World Bank affirmed that the costs of material damage suffered by Ukraine since the beginning of the war amount to nearly 60 billion dollars, and warned that the figure does not include the “increasing costs” of the conflict with Russia for the country’s economy.

“The World Bank concluded an initial estimate on physical damage. It places the costs, in terms of buildings and infrastructure, at around 60 billion dollars and does not include the growing economic cost for the Ukrainian economy,” said the president of the organization, David Malpass.

“Of course, the war continues, so these costs are increasing,” he added, before stressing that “Ukrainian government and state-owned enterprises face a large non-military fiscal deficit and debt burden,” according to the transcript of his statements provided by the World Bank itself through its website.

Malpass has been “deeply horrified” and “shocked” by the Russian invasion and the damage committed against the civilian population.

In this regard, he recalled that the World Bank “mobilized more than 3 billion dollars to support the continuation of essential government services in Ukraine.”
