According to Investing, this project “will primarily use air cooling, minimizing the use of water in its cooling systems” to meet Amazon’s commitment to zero emissions.

According to Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of Infrastructure Services at AWS, “the growing demand for cloud services“ in the region justifies the construction of this data center, incorporating advanced technology and the participation of government agencies, the private sector, and startups.

It will be built in the Science Park, located in Canelones.

In this way, Google expands its presence in Latin America. It is timely to remember that the first large data center is located in Chile.

“Construction of the data center will be divided into four phases and will last 26 months, employing between 300 and 400 workers, with a temporary increase to 800. Once completed, the plant will create around 50 permanent jobs,” they have indicated from the company.

The new large data center will be focused on strengthening the technology company’s key services and products, “including Google Search, YouTube, Maps and Google Workspace, which encompasses applications such as Gmail, Docs and Sheets.”

The facility will become part of the company’s extensive global network, which currently includes 28 data centers around the world. Likewise, the expansion will reach the “Google Cloud infrastructure, which covers 40 regions dedicated to cloud services.”

With the construction of this data center, Uruguay advances in the digital race, as highlighted by the country’s chancellor, Omar Paganini, in addition to underlining “the hard work and support of various Uruguayan ministries, underlining the importance of the country being open to projects of cutting-edge technology companies.”

Uruguay will be a great center for innovation, leveraged by the legal security that the nation provides.

According to Eduardo López, president of Google Cloud for Latin America, the company is making a “sustained commitment to the region, highlighting Uruguay’s strengths in terms of reliable infrastructure and training of local talent.” He estimates that the new project will improve connectivity in Uruguay and will generate a positive impact on the local community.

This new data center will be instrumental in supporting the company’s various services, including Google Cloud, Search, Maps and YouTube. According to the Google blog post, the sprawling 33-acre site will not only generate jobs for workers on site, but also for those involved in the construction phase.

In addition, Google has set an ambitious goal for this data center: to operate carbon-free by the end of the decade. In the company’s words, “We have set the goal of operating all our data centers and campuses with carbon-free energy (ELC), every hour of every day by 2030.”

Despite this significant expansion, Google faced massive layoffs earlier this year, with plans to continue staff cuts throughout the year. Google CEO Sundar Pichai justified these cuts, highlighting the need to build capacity to invest even more in priority technologies, such as artificial intelligence.

In 2023, the company laid off more than 12,000 employees after pledging to reduce its overall workforce by 6%. Pichai notes that the expectation for 2024 is to lay off fewer employees compared to the previous year.

With this feature, the company seeks to give users greater control over the information they share and their activity, since it will allow them to review which companies share this data with the Meta platform and delete it if they wish.

This will be possible on Instagram thanks to a new functionality called Activity Off-Meta Technologies -Review activity outside of Meta technologies-, which has been available on Facebook for a few months and which can be accessed from the Information Center. social network accounts.

Activity Off-Meta Technologies is a summary of activities that organizations share with the technology firm in relation to the interactions that users. These companies use the tools offered by Meta to collect all the activity related to the accounts of the platforms it offers, as Meta reminds us in its Help section.

On this website, the company also remembers that it uses user activity outside its platforms to display advertisements according to their tastes and preferences, suggest events or products of interest and show new companies and brands, among other purposes.

Thus, with the deployment of this feature also on Instagram, Meta hopes that users will be able to “easily review the companies that share data with Meta, unlink some of them to further personalize the experience or delete the data completely,” as commented in an entry on your blog.

Another new feature that will come to the social network’s Account Center is the function that allows you to transfer Instagram photos and videos to other services, which will make it “much easier to share and save memories.” With this option, for example, users will be able to send photos they have shared through Instagram to a third-party service to create an album and print them.

Finally, Meta has commented that from its Account Center, which launched in January of this year and which unifies all the configuration menus of Facebook, Messenger and Instagram, it is now possible to download the information from these accounts simultaneously.

Until now, the Account Center only allowed data to be downloaded individually, that is, choosing one platform or another. This option, by the way, is maintained for those users who wish to access their information individually.

The information was provided by Fernando Maturana, general manager of Gtd Colombia, which is a company with more than 40 years of experience in the telecommunications market that maintains operations in different countries such as Spain, Chile, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia.

Maturanda pointed out that the company carried out an evaluation of the different cities where the investment could be made and the study determined that Barranquilla has the ideal characteristics for the installation and development of these telecommunications projects.

Strategic location

Barranquilla, the capital of the Atlantic, has a great growth and development of commercial activities, with a privileged location for the promotion of telecommunications projects, specifically those related to data storage because it presents a “high connectivity with redundancy, aligned time zone with the USA and the entry of 4 submarine cables”.

In addition, the city has a great potential for “solar and wind energy” that makes it an attraction for international organizations that are looking for renewable energy sources. Also, its proximity to the Magdalena River facilitates the installation of cooling systems necessary to supply cooling to data centers.

Omar Téllez, high councilor for Technology and Entrepreneurship of the District, highlighted the reasons of the city to lead the digital transformation of the country with the execution of this megaproject. He explained that the increase in demand for “data transfer throughout South America” generates the need to create “hyper scale data centers.”

Among other factors that make Barranquilla a strategic territory for the creation of data centers are: it has a diversified economy; it has a potential of 10 million consumers; it will have the most extensive underground electrical interconnection network in the country and is a “central point among the three current HSDC projects in Latin America, projected in Mexico, Brazil and Chile.”
