The EU announced the new Children’s Law, which will ban social media for children under 13 and establish mini-accounts for teenagers between 13 and 15 years old, supervised by parents, with restricted functions and usage limits.

This was announced this week by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who indicated that the EU Kids Act seeks to protect minors from inappropriate or sensitive content by establishing different levels of prevention.

In this regard, the official told Parliament that “from age 15 to 18,” she added, “safe design will be mandatory for platforms.”

The regulation “will make a verifiable legal obligation an age limit that platforms are not currently required to check and that minors can circumvent simply by declaring a false age when registering.”

The law arises in response to the dangers of addictive social media features, where minors are exposed to “increasingly extreme content.” The President of the EC also expressed her refusal to accept “the use of girls’ photos to create AI-generated sexualized images.”

The platforms will be required to demonstrate that they are safe for children and adolescents, in the face of accusations of addiction, and consequences in children “such as sleep loss, anxiety, self-harm.”
