This is the second time the White House has asked Congress for this reduction in NASA’s science program budget, recalling that the first request was last year but was rejected by lawmakers.

“The proposal comes at a time when NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman is trying to overhaul the country’s space program.” As is known, last month Isaacman announced several changes at the agency, “such as the transition to commercial rockets for lunar launches, accelerating the pace of missions, and establishing a lunar base that will cost US$30 billion over the next decade.”

The White House has also called for the gradual retirement of the Space Launch System rocket, built by Boeing, given its enormous cost and delays, as well as the retirement of Lockheed Martin Corp.’s Orion crew capsule, “which currently carries a crew of four astronauts on a lunar mission, to replace them with commercial alternatives.”

Another measure is a $1 billion cut to the International Space Station, whose decommissioning is planned for 2030.

South Korea is going through a moment of tension that it intends to alleviate with this measure announced by the central bank on February 25.

According to the regulatory body, “the new growth forecast is 1.5 % of GDP for 2025, four-tenths below the 1.9 % initially forecast. In addition, the reference interest rate will also be reduced from the current 3 % to 2.75 %.”

The announcement quickly generated concern about its possible impact on key aspects, such as the indebtedness of families, incentive for internal spending, which would increase debts.

However, analysts believe that the reduction in interest rates could boost internal demand, which would translate into “a recovery in consumption and investments in key sectors such as construction, which have shown weakness in recent quarters.”
