On May 25, Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, will be published, addressing the current state of humanity with regard to advances in artificial intelligence.

The Pope addresses key issues such as human dignity in the digital age, the use of algorithms, labor justice, and employment.

The encyclical Magnifica Humanitas will be presented by Leo XIV at an event in the Vatican on the scheduled date. “The speakers at the presentation will be Cardinals Víctor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, and Michael Czerny, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.”

The event will also feature the participation of “Christopher Olah, co-founder of Anthropic (USA) and director of research on the interpretability of artificial intelligence, as well as Professors Anna Rowlands, theologian and professor at Durham University in the United Kingdom, and Leocadie Lushombo, professor of Political Theology and Catholic Social Thought at the Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara University in California.”

The closing remarks will be delivered by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, followed by an address from Pope Leo XIV.

Since his election, the Pope has made clear his interest in the Church’s position regarding the new “industrial revolution and the advances in artificial intelligence, which pose new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice, and work.” At that time, he emphasized that the economy is dominated by algorithms, platforms, and automation, questioning the possibility that many jobs will disappear due to AI.

Last Sunday, the Pope urged everyone to “commit to promoting forms of communication that always respect the truth of the human person” in the face of artificial intelligence, in an appeal at the end of the Regina Coeli prayer from the Apostolic Palace.
