The Cuban drug Jusvinza is advancing to the second phase of clinical trials, demonstrating its effectiveness in relieving pain and inflammation in secondary joints in patients recovering from the chikungunya virus.

This was reported by Julio Baldomero, director of Clinical Research at the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB).

According to the specialist, “the final data confirmed the hypothesis put forward by the researchers.” In this regard, Baldomero stated that they managed to resolve the “painful and inflammatory symptoms of the joints caused by this virus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes and has affected tropical regions of the world.”

What is Jusvinza?

The medication is essentially an innovative therapeutic product developed at the CIGB (Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology). The active ingredient “is a peptide originally designed to treat rheumatoid arthritis” that was incorporated into the Cuban national protocol during the COVID-19 pandemic for use in “severely ill patients, helping to reduce mortality on the Caribbean island before the arrival of vaccines.”

Clinical trials with promising results

In early December 2025, two clinical trials began to verify the therapeutic effect and safety of Jusvinza in these types of patients.

“The first study was conducted at the Diez de Octubre Clinical Surgical Teaching Hospital in Havana and included 174 people in the post-acute stage; while the second was carried out at the Faustino Pérez Provincial Clinical Surgical Teaching Hospital in the western province of Matanzas, with 120 individuals in the chronic stage of the disease.”

The conclusions of both studies indicate that 70 % of the patients achieved the expected results. Specialists demonstrated the efficacy and safety of the product. Furthermore, it was found that “it is not only effective in relieving joint symptoms, but its effects are long-lasting, preventing patients from developing the chronic form of the disease.”

Russia’s move comes amid the energy crisis stemming from the Middle East conflict, with global repercussions.

The Venezuelan airline Rutaca will activate a new route to Havana, from Valencia, the capital of Carabobo state, starting July 18.

It was learned that two weekly frequencies will be activated, operated on B737-300 and MD-80 aircraft, departing Valencia at 7:00 a.m. and arriving in Havana at 10:30 a.m.

It was also reported that the Havana-Valencia flight will depart at 12:00 p.m. and arrive in Valencia at 3:30 p.m.

On the other hand, Rutaca will also launch two domestic flights from the country’s capital to the states of Anzoátegui and Carabobo starting July 17.

Spain agreed with Cuba on a medium- and long-term Debt Conversion Program of up to €375 million, which will focus on economic growth, as well as social development, investment, and debt relief.

Cuban Minister of Economy, Trade, and Business Carlos Cuerpo traveled to Spain to sign the agreement. He emphasized the importance of this program to “finance sustainable development projects in key sectors such as energy, water, and food security, among others.”

Although this program between Spain and Cuba was agreed upon in 2016, it will be activated in 2025, in line with the multilateral agreement reached within the Paris Club in January.

“This measure represents a significant step in Spain’s commitment to innovative debt relief instruments that are geared toward concrete results and effective cooperation. It is also aligned with the objectives of the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development,” they stated.

It is important to note that these debt conversion programs have the primary objective of boosting economic growth and social development in developing countries “through debt forgiveness and its transformation into high-impact investment projects.”

The funds can be used to finance projects implemented by companies from both countries, and through international organizations and specialized organizations with operational experience in the country.

During the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, a cybersecurity agreement was announced between Venezuela, Russia, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Nicaragua, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, and Laos.

The signing of this agreement is an endorsement of the United Nations Convention on Cybercrime and will help members collect and share digital evidence, combat the use of cyberspace to commit crimes, and strengthen regulations in this field.

“The group urged all member states to sign the document during the official ceremony scheduled for Hanoi in 2025, and to work on the development of an additional protocol addressing other crimes enabled by digital technologies, in accordance with General Assembly resolutions 74/247 and 75/282.”

Venezuela and the 11 signatory countries urged the UN to establish a “Permanent Mechanism on ICT Security, to replace the current open working group on the peaceful use of information technologies (2021–2025). The objective would be to consolidate a stable, consensus-based institutional framework to address cybersecurity issues from the perspective of international peace and stability.”

The document is critical of sensitive issues such as the use of new technologies as tools for interference in internal affairs, “political destabilization, and manipulation through satellite internet networks.”

The twelve nations advocate multilateralism, non-interference, and respect for each state’s national legislation.

Cuba officially requested its incorporation into the BRICS as a partner country. This was announced on Tuesday, October 8, by the Director General of Bilateral Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Carlos Miguel Pereira.

Through a publication on the social network X, the official detailed that said request was made through a letter sent to Vladimir Putin, president of Russia, the country that currently holds the presidency of the group this year.

Although Cuba is not yet a member of the BRICS, officials of the country “have already participated in several meetings” of the group, “such as the intervention of Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez at the ministerial meeting in June.”

This group, originally made up of Russia, Brazil, India, China and South Africa, was expanded this year by accepting the membership of Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia.

Putin has stated that “the enlargement demonstrates the growing authority of the bloc, as well as its key role in international affairs. In addition, the president stated in September that currently 34 countries have expressed their desire to join the BRICS in one form or another.”
