According to the bank, this is the first step towards full opening in 2026. The plan involves customers of four regional banks, including Banque Populaire Île-de-France and Caisse d’Épargne Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.

With this initiative, the bank becomes one of the first major traditional players to natively integrate crypto trading into its mobile applications. The offering provides access to Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and USDC for approximately two million users, who will be able to trade without relying on external platforms. The system operates through a separate digital asset account managed by Hexarq, the group’s crypto subsidiary.

The bank has a portfolio of 12 million retail clients. The trial aims to gauge the public’s actual interest in crypto trading.

DZ Bank has a portfolio of 700 corporate lenders. It recently announced its late-2024 cryptocurrency pilot plan, which aims to “give customers direct access to a variety of cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, without the need for financial advice.”

The trend of increasing adoption of digital currencies in the global market, in addition to the demand for new investment mechanisms by clients, has accelerated DZ Bank’s decision to launch its pilot plan.

The second-largest German bank plans to allow the 700 member cooperative banks autonomy to decide whether to offer cryptocurrency trading to their clients. Initially, a partnership with DWP Bank was planned for the trading pilot. Currently, there is speculation that new partners could join the initiative.

It is important to highlight that the joining of DZ Bank in cryptocurrency trading occurs after the launch of a crypto custody platform in November 2023 “that takes advantage of Ripple’s technological solution to offer secure storage and processing of digital assets.”

At the moment, DZ Bank is awaiting the cryptocurrency custody license from the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin).

According to the platform, there are currently many doubts in the population regarding the use of digital currencies. In fact, although the European Central Bank has taken important steps towards bolockchain technology, mistrust of central bank digital currencies or CBDCs persists.

The trials carried out by some governments inside and outside Europe with digital assets, as well as the success stories in other latitudes, have shed light on the search for a better understanding of cryptocurrencies. But a regulatory framework for these assets is still required, which gives security to the population.

To pave the way towards this goal, EuroSwap has created EuroSwap EDEX, which allows residents of the European Union to buy and sell cryptocurrencies, in addition to investing in them, but using the euro. It offers the fiat-crypto link, which makes cryptocurrency trading possible, even for those who do not have deep knowledge on the subject.

Challenges for the digital euro

The new digital economy had already reached great dynamism before the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic. E-commerce has also taken hold in all industry sectors globally.

Against this background, the European Union is forced to study new ways not only to strengthen the euro, its fiat currency, but to compete with cryptocurrencies, which are here to stay.

The European Central Bank is aware that the post-pandemic stage can generate scenarios such as a lack of cash, an excessive increase in the demand for electronic commerce, as well as the launch of new digital currencies around the world in order to face other problems, such as inflation or the devaluation of the currency of each country.

Ensuring the population’s access to safe money may represent the definitive boost for the ECB, with possible progress towards the development and adoption of the digital euro in a couple of years.

For the president of the Islamic republic, it is essential that the nation considers the technical and legal requirements related to cryptocurrencies and digital currencies, understanding the risks involved in cryptocurrency trading. In his opinion, the conscience of citizens in this area is very important to avoid unprofessional income.

Rouhani believes that to legalize the activity of cryptocurrencies and protect people’s capital, it is necessary to “think of a solution as soon as possible and establish and communicate the necessary laws and instructions.”

As will be recalled last month, Iran announced, through the Ministry of Energy, that crypto mining with domestic electricity is illegal, for which all those domestic miners who are discovered will be sanctioned with heavy fines. “The Ministries of Communications and Information Technology and Energy are in charge of cutting off the electricity supply to these centers.”

The measure of prohibition of cryptocurrency mining throughout the territory will meet the needs of the increase in domestic electricity consumption during hot summers in the country.

One of the main investment institutions, Goldman Sachs, had its trading desk for cryptocurrencies again on March 1st.

According to a source directly related to the institution, the bank is working with bitcoin futures and non-deliverable forwards for its client catalog.

This option reopens just a month after Goldman Sachs CEO Loyd Blankfein was skeptical of bitcoin.

Bitcoin futures are contracts where the two parties agree to buy or sell bitcoins in the future at a pre-established price, while non-deliverable forwards refer to contracts for the purchase and sale of bitcoins settled in cash, where they have a expiration date and a predefined price.

In addition to the trading desk, Goldman Sachs is working on other projects related to the crypto-assets sector, which include blockchain technology and digital currencies from the American central bank.
