Technology leader Google is launching its chatbot Bard, a competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. According to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Bard will be an “experimental conversational AI service” that will answer user questions and participate in conversations. The software will be available to a select group of “trusted testers” starting today and rolling out to all interested parties in the coming weeks.

Bard draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality answers, and can be a tool for creativity and curiosity. Pichai also suggests that it could answer questions about recent events, something ChatGPT struggles with.

Google has been cautious in the past with its AI technology, but Bard’s hasty announcement is a clear indication of the “red alert” triggered at the company following the launch of ChatGPT last year. OpenAI’s decision to make ChatGPT freely available online brought millions to this novel form of automatic text generation.

Despite Google’s extensive experience in AI, the company has been reluctant to share its tools with the public due to the well-documented tendencies of big language models like LaMDA and GPT-3.5 towards toxic content and asserting false information. However, Google is pushing the accelerator with Bard so as not to be left behind in the race for dominance in the chatbot market.
