This Monday, July 27, during the daily press conference of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, a proposal from the authorities to regulate the use of social media and digital platforms by children and adolescents was announced.

The authorities did not refer to a ban but rather to controlling the excessive use of social media by minors, through cell phones and computers, considering that “it can have implications for the rest of their lives. And if it affects all children and all adolescents, then it has general implications for the development of the country.”

According to Sheinbaum, nearly 70 % of parents “agree that cell phone use should be regulated in schools.” In this regard, education authorities, along with other specialists, will discuss scientific evidence on the use of technology and its effect on minors.

For his part, Mexico’s Secretary of Education, Mario Delgado, explained that “the discussion cannot be limited to schools, since a significant portion of the time children spend in front of screens occurs at home.”

Regarding the risks of the use of social media, video games, and online gambling, specialists have pointed out that excessive exposure in children generates a “much greater release of dopamine, but that in the long run, it causes the brain to reduce its production and decrease the sensitivity of receptors, which means that normal activities cease to be satisfying.”
