The messaging platform WhatsApp is ready to implement unique usernames, a long-awaited development for users to finally free themselves from the requirement to provide their phone number to be contacted.

The change, “confirmed in the latest beta version for Android (v2.25.28.12), represents the end of the exclusive reliance on the phone number as the sole form of identification and contact on the platform.”

The implementation of usernames on WhatsApp is an important step in terms of privacy. As is known, currently it is necessary to share your personal number to contact someone. But this is sensitive information, especially for those who use the app in work or public contexts.

By removing this requirement, the number is released, as WhatsApp users “can be found and added without having to share their phone number, thus protecting their personal information.”

Furthermore, the unique identifier is activated, through which “each user can choose their own alias, just like on social networks like Instagram or rival apps like Telegram.”

To prevent the most coveted aliases from being monopolized, the platform is developing a pre-registration mechanism for usernames. It also “plans to include a username password system” that will allow users to control who can start conversations, even if they know your alias, adding an extra layer of security.”

The social network Twitter announced that a new button is available to users that allows them to control the threads of conversations in which they have been mentioned by other contacts and untag themselves from them.

The company indicated, through its Twitter Safety account, that it managed to introduce the new button in all the accounts of the social network and for the different devices.

In its beginnings, the button was predestined for the web version of the messaging service, where a “button was displayed in the Options section of the publications, represented by three horizontal dots”.

At the time, the social network explained that the fact of “leaving a conversation” did not mean that users “could not access or view it, but rather that the service would be maintained.”

A very simple process

The company indicated that to use the button option, users must press the three horizontal dots of the publication in which they have been mentioned and select the option Exit this conversation.

The platform will then issue, through a pop-up window, a message warning of the complications or consequences of leaving the conversation in which they have been mentioned.

The message explains that by “untagging the username, it will remain in the post, but will be untagged from the original tweet and any replies it receives. Then future mentions in it will be stopped, and you will also not receive notifications in the event that other users interact in this Twitter thread.
