“This is the second lowest monthly variation reported by the issuing entity in 2016, only behind the 6.3 % recorded in May, and marks a significant moderation after the spike in July, when the CPI reached 19.9 %,” according to BCV data.

The August result reflects that the accumulated inflation for the year amounts to 200.1 %, while the year-on-year inflation stands at 534.2 %.

According to the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV), August saw a recovery in distribution channels, along with less pressure on the foreign exchange market, reflected in a more contained exchange rate fluctuation and more stable prices for goods and services.

The central bank’s data showed the following double-digit monthly increases: housing services (excluding telephone) 12.3 %; communications 11.7 %; transportation 10.3 %; and miscellaneous goods and services 10.1 %.

On the other hand, household equipment increased by 9.6 %, while restaurants and hotels rose by 9.5 %, and housing rentals by 9.2 %. Clothing and footwear registered a 9 % increase, while alcoholic beverages and tobacco, and health services, both experienced increases of 8.9 %.

The smallest monthly increases were observed in the recreation and culture sector (8.4 %), and in the food and non-alcoholic beverages and education services sectors (8.2 %).

Regarding accumulated inflation between January and August, restaurants and hotels led the increases with 212.3 %, slightly above healthcare at 212%. Following these were miscellaneous goods and services (208 %), recreation and culture (204.8 %), clothing and footwear (202.2 %), and communications (201.7 %).

According to the union member, “the damages recorded so far do not compromise the supply, production or distribution of goods.”

López explained that “only 6 % of the companies reported moderate damage and another 14% presented slight damage, mainly in some plants in the food sector and in industries located in the Yaracuy state.” Regarding companies in the states of Carabobo, Aragua, Lara and others in the central region, including Miranda, he stressed that they maintain their operations following the corresponding security protocols.

He added that “the regional chambers and the different sectors are working together with the affected companies to complete the repairs in the coming days.” The exception is a vegetable oil processor located in the Veroes municipality, Yaracuy state, which temporarily suspended operations due to the damage suffered.

López has ruled out shortages of goods and products in the national market, since production and distribution continue normally.

Conindustria proposed the application of fiscal measures to support the recovery of the affected areas, such as “reviewing exemptions from VAT, Income Tax and some import taxes, especially for essential inputs.” Also, they ask you to avoid nervous buying of medications.

Atencio said, “Prices are going to go down, that’s for sure,” adding that “the cost structure naturally adjusts to the exchange rate,” although he clarified that it’s not an instantaneous process, as it depends on inventory replenishment and agreements with suppliers.

According to ANSA, “domestic competition and a commitment to the end consumer are forcing businesses to reflect the drop in the foreign currency on product labels to maintain sales volume.”

Atencio referred to transparency in price marking as a fundamental aspect in this stage of economic transition. He emphasized the commitment of supermarkets affiliated with the association to ensure that the benefits of the inflow of foreign currency and the revaluation of the bolivar “reach the pockets of citizens directly.”

The official recalled that during this time, demand for seasonal inputs increases and reported that a few weeks ago, “seven vessels were operating in Puerto Cabello and two in La Guaira, figures that had not been seen in previous periods. He noted that a steady flow of raw materials is being observed, especially ABA foodstuffs, in addition to imports of corn, sorghum, wheat, and other products.”

He also referred to the arrival of containerized cargo in the country, including white goods and items related to the holiday season, although he warned that “the sector still operates with transport fleets that are more than 40 years outdated and have not been renewed.”

Durvelle highlighted the sector’s efforts to reinvest in order to “face current challenges. Among the priorities, he mentioned the need to adjust freight rates and update freight transport rates.”

However, according to the Central Reserve Bank, the indicator remains within the 1 % to 1.3 % range.

On the other hand, last month’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased to 0.04 % compared to August. The items that showed the greatest increase were recreation and culture (0.17 %); healthcare, restaurants, and hotels (both at 0.15 %); miscellaneous goods and services (0.13 %); and furniture, household goods, and home improvement (0.05 %).

The National Institute of Statistics (INEI) also revealed in its report that the cumulative variation for the year is 1.15 %. However, inflation in the Latin American country remains within the 1 % to 3 % range set by the Central Bank of Lima.

Regarding the Consumer Price Index for Metropolitan Limait stood at 0.01 % in September and 1.25 % for the year. Year-over-year inflation was 1.36 %.,

Data on inflation by city indicate that “three cities registered rates above 2%, with Ica standing out at 2.28 %, followed by Tumbes at 2.09 % and Piura at 2.03 %.”

Of the 26 cities where the Consumer Price Index is calculated, 15 reported price increases, with the largest increases in Puerto Maldonado (0.38 %), Puno (0.31 %), Arequipa (0.29 %), and Piura (0.26 %).

Likewise, eleven cities recorded negative results, including Huancavelica (-0.38 %), Moyobamba (-0.34 %), Moquegua (-0.28 %), and Chachapoyas (-0.20 %).

The projection for an increase in inflation for the last quarter of the year is pending, pointing to a closing of 1.8 %, “driven by the low comparison base, and 2.5 % in 2026, due to the normalization of food prices and smaller drops in the exchange rate and inputs,” according to BBVA.
