Peru will award 5G technology in the first half of 2025, in accordance with the legislative decree approved on August 14 that allows the allocation of the frequency of this band for mobile telephony and higher.

The Peruvian government is focused on technological advancement, mainly the Internet of Things (IoT), optimization of production processes, “the automation of some production chain, automated vehicles, among others, which will generate new efficiencies in companies.”

Regarding citizens, he stressed that the 5G band is more thought of “in geolocation, the use of remote controls for equipment in the home, among others,” as a way to improve the quality of life of families.

The participants indicated that the agreement defines a “historic” moment for both nations and stressed that it “will contribute to strengthening ties that are already very good.”

Abinader pointed out that the open skies agreement with the United States makes them “stronger,” and “constitutes a fundamental step toward strengthening our international connections and the economic development of our nation.”

In addition, the president of the Dominican Republic highlighted the fact as a pillar for the foundations of an international aviation system based on “equality of opportunities and respect for free enterprise and competition.”

US Undersecretary Fernández estimates that with this agreement the citizens of both countries will benefit and recalled that “more than 2.5 million people of Dominican descent live in the United States, the Dominican Republic’s first trading partner and first investor.”

In a historic milestone, the Chilean government and technology giant Google unveiled plans to create the Humboldt Cable, the first underwater fiber-optic cable that will cross the vast South Pacific, linking the coasts of South America with Oceania and Asia.

With an approximate length of 14,800 kilometres, the Humboldt Cable, which will connect the picturesque coastal town of Valparaíso in Chile with Sydney in Australia, is designed to have a lifespan of 25 years and an astonishing transmission capacity of 144 terabytes per second.

During the presentation of the ambitious project in Valparaíso, Chilean President Gabriel Boric highlighted the importance of the Humboldt as an “underwater bridge for the exchange of technology from south to south, knowledge and innovation”, stressing that this connection will bring Chile closer to one of the most crucial development poles in the world: Asia and Oceania.

Boric revealed that the control of submarine fibers will be shared between the Chilean state, through the public company Desarrollo País, and Google, who will collaborate in the joint commercialization of their use.

The project, whose construction is scheduled to begin this year with a planned completion in 2026, pays homage to the renowned Prussian biologist, geographer and humanist Alexandre Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), considered the father of ecology, whose legacy marked the project with his name.

Boric emphasized the geopolitical relevance of Cable Humboldt by pointing to the lack of such connectivity “from south to south“, while highlighting the initial state investment of $55 million to carry out this pioneering initiative.

In the Tourism sector, Segovia was the scene of a use case in which Augmented Reality and 5G technology was used to enrich tourist visits by downloading historical content in real time that helps visitors immerse themselves in different eras. In the same way, Telefónica has developed a real-time simultaneous translation service based on 5G.

With regard to the connected car, 5G has been used to reinforce driving safety by providing connectivity both to the vehicle and to elements of the city (traffic lights, zebra crossings or tunnels, among others). These projects have been tested in various towns, such as Segovia, Barcelona or Lugo.

Telefónica has also undertaken projects with 5G in the field of broadcasting events. The Martín Carpena (in Málaga) was the venue chosen in the Copa del Rey to carry out a 360º live transmission pilot through 5G, which is a new immersive way of watching shows in real time through virtual reality without being physically in the venue where the event is held.

Finally, another field in which 5G is called to open up new possibilities is that of teaching. An example in this sense is the virtual classroom developed by Telefónica with IE University to follow the classes remotely with VR glasses and to be able to go through the scenarios that are explained virtually.

The companies Oracle and Claro announced the signing of an agreement to create the first public cloud in Colombia. Through the América Móvil unit, they hope to provide service to customers throughout Latin America.

Colombia will become the fourth country in the region to have a public cloud, after Mexico, Brazil and Chile. According to Claro and Oracle spokespersons, the cloud will be able to benefit both private companies and the government sector in their digital transformation processes.

Both companies have considered the geographical position of Colombia as strategic in the search for technological solutions. In this sense, the agreement between Oracle and Claro Colombia, called América Móvil unit, will be in force for a period of 10 years.

Germán Borromei, general manager of Oracle for Colombia and Ecuador, told Reuters: “It is an agreement signed by both companies to redouble our commitment to the country. Two technological giants are bringing the first world-class public cloud to Colombian soil for the first time”.

For his part, Carlos Zenteno, president of Claro Colombia, assured that “the world-class public cloud will accelerate the digital transformation processes of private companies and public sector entities.”

The Director of Networks for TIM Brazil, Marco Di Costanzo, explained the importance of expanding 4G technology in Brazil, which will allow all areas of the country to be included in the digital world.

“Today we have the largest satellite backhaul in Latin America to support the expansion of 4G from north to south of the country. We want to accompany Brazil in digital inclusion with the Sky Coverage project and for that we have important partners, such as Intelsat, with whom we work especially in the northern region”, Di Costanzo highlighted.

For his part, Ricardo La Guardia, Regional Vice President of Intelsat, pointed out: “The reliability of the Intelsat network and its great coverage will allow TIM to provide higher quality services to its clients in these regions of difficult access and connectivity, in order to comply with the business objectives of the company and respecting its environmental, social and governance initiatives.”

Apple plans to introduce its first four nanometer (nm) modems, which it will produce through Taiwanese processor maker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), in 2023.

As Nikkei has published, with this partnership, the company co-founded by Steve Jobs plans to adopt TSMC’s four-nanometer chip production technology to produce its first internal 5G modem chip and thus reduce its dependence on Qualcomm.

Last December, the company began developing its own modem for mobile phones in order to reduce dependence on Qualcomm, the supplier of these devices for the iPhone 12 and 13 series with 5G connectivity.

Since the beginning of 2021, processor manufacturers, such as the American Qualcomm, have been denouncing a global shortage of semiconductors, which depend mainly on Asian and Taiwanese companies, such as TSMC.

Own production

This agreement would give Apple some security to continue marketing its products without the need to depend on the company that until now was listed as the supplier of most of its components, which translates into greater control over its integration capacity of ‘hardware’.

According to what the aforementioned medium publishes, for the new iPhone 5G modem Apple is using the production of five nanometer (nm) chips from TSMC to design, test and produce what will be its own four nanometer SoC. According to Nikkei, it will not be commercialized until 2023.

As reported by the same media last July, iPad tablets will be the first to adopt TSMC’s three-nanometer technology. Nikkei has added that in the second half of 2022 Apple will use the four-nanometer technology from TSMC and not from Qualcomm, as before, for its iPhone processor.
