By next December, they estimate that they will have the amount of valuation of 5G technology, according to the vice minister of communications of Peru, Carla Sosa, who stated that this step “will contribute to closing digital gaps throughout the country.”

Sosa said: “It will not only allow progress in closing infrastructure gaps with 4G but also in the implementation of 5G so that industries and citizens can have higher speed internet to improve productive areas, improve access to health services, medicine and health.”

The Peruvian government is focused on technological advancement, mainly the Internet of Things (IoT), optimization of production processes, “the automation of some production chain, automated vehicles, among others, which will generate new efficiencies in companies.”

The negotiations took 25 years.

The signing of the pact took place in the Dominican capital, Santo Domingo, with the goal of increasing the number of flights and being able to offer more competitive prices.

Present at the signing, held at the National Palace, were “the US Undersecretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy and Environment, José Fernández, and the Dominican Minister of Tourism, David Collado,” accompanied by the president of the Caribbean country, Luis Abinader, “and part of his Government, as well as representatives of the US Administration.”

The participants indicated that the agreement defines a “historic” moment for both nations and stressed that it “will contribute to strengthening ties that are already very good.”

Abinader pointed out that the open skies agreement with the United States makes them “stronger,” and “constitutes a fundamental step toward strengthening our international connections and the economic development of our nation.”

In addition, the president of the Dominican Republic highlighted the fact as a pillar for the foundations of an international aviation system based on “equality of opportunities and respect for free enterprise and competition.”

US Undersecretary Fernández estimates that with this agreement the citizens of both countries will benefit and recalled that “more than 2.5 million people of Dominican descent live in the United States, the Dominican Republic’s first trading partner and first investor.”

With an approximate length of 14,800 kilometres, the Humboldt Cable, which will connect the picturesque coastal town of Valparaíso in Chile with Sydney in Australia, is designed to have a lifespan of 25 years and an astonishing transmission capacity of 144 terabytes per second.

During the presentation of the ambitious project in Valparaíso, Chilean President Gabriel Boric highlighted the importance of the Humboldt as an “underwater bridge for the exchange of technology from south to south, knowledge and innovation”, stressing that this connection will bring Chile closer to one of the most crucial development poles in the world: Asia and Oceania.

Boric revealed that the control of submarine fibers will be shared between the Chilean state, through the public company Desarrollo País, and Google, who will collaborate in the joint commercialization of their use.

The project, whose construction is scheduled to begin this year with a planned completion in 2026, pays homage to the renowned Prussian biologist, geographer and humanist Alexandre Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), considered the father of ecology, whose legacy marked the project with his name.

Boric emphasized the geopolitical relevance of Cable Humboldt by pointing to the lack of such connectivity “from south to south“, while highlighting the initial state investment of $55 million to carry out this pioneering initiative.

The distribution agreement will allow Orange to integrate the OneWeb service with its corporate clients or other telecommunications operators in different regions of the world, according to a statement from the French group.

The Orange agreement joins the growing framework of alliances between the satellite industry and telecommunications operators, since, for example, Vodafone announced at the Mobile World Congress the launch of different pilot projects this summer to test the services of connectivity of the company AST SpaceMobile in Spain.

For its part, Telefónica has agreements with OneWeb itself and more recently it allied with the Spanish Sateliot to provide IoT 5G connectivity services via satellite by integrating the future network of the company into that of Telefónica Tech.

However, it is still not very clear how all this can affect people’s day-to-day lives.

Pilot projects based on 5G

5G technology represents a leap from science fiction to reality (photo: iproup.com, via web)

Although some of these things still seem like something out of a science fiction movie, Telefónica is already working on numerous pilot projects in which the combination of fiber and 5G make it possible to show the real possibilities of this technology and strengthen developments around it.

This is how the company’s experts explain it, which has already worked with drones to develop parcel delivery in collaboration with Correos. Or in the field of health, it has launched projects such as Ocuexplorer, which facilitates both access and prior telediagnosis, which is very important for the prevention and control of eye diseases.

Likewise, the operator has launched a program so that through virtual reality and 5G networks, a remote expert can assist from a distance in surgical operations, something that has already been used with the Quirónsalud hospital in Malaga.

In the Tourism sector, Segovia was the scene of a use case in which Augmented Reality and 5G technology was used to enrich tourist visits by downloading historical content in real time that helps visitors immerse themselves in different eras. In the same way, Telefónica has developed a real-time simultaneous translation service based on 5G.

With regard to the connected car, 5G has been used to reinforce driving safety by providing connectivity both to the vehicle and to elements of the city (traffic lights, zebra crossings or tunnels, among others). These projects have been tested in various towns, such as Segovia, Barcelona or Lugo.

Telefónica has also undertaken projects with 5G in the field of broadcasting events. The Martín Carpena (in Málaga) was the venue chosen in the Copa del Rey to carry out a 360º live transmission pilot through 5G, which is a new immersive way of watching shows in real time through virtual reality without being physically in the venue where the event is held.

Finally, another field in which 5G is called to open up new possibilities is that of teaching. An example in this sense is the virtual classroom developed by Telefónica with IE University to follow the classes remotely with VR glasses and to be able to go through the scenarios that are explained virtually.

Germán Borromei, general manager of Oracle for Colombia and Ecuador, told Reuters: “It is an agreement signed by both companies to redouble our commitment to the country.
One of the objectives of the project is to develop coverage, which has more than 1,000 sites, to offer connectivity in a “sustainable way and without a network to the most remote areas of Brazil, where there is a lack of electricity network infrastructure.”

With the execution of the project, the companies expect to deploy the technology in all the municipalities of the Brazilian country by 2023. Sky Coverage will provide coverage to “neighborhoods, towns, highways and resorts, also using the satellite connection in remote areas”, expanding the reach of the networks with greater speed than the terrestrial ones.

In addition, they aspire to increase connectivity for the agribusiness sector, mainly for equipment and investments in the Internet of Things (IoT).

Digital inclusion in Brazil

The Director of Networks for TIM Brazil, Marco Di Costanzo, explained the importance of expanding 4G technology in Brazil, which will allow all areas of the country to be included in the digital world.

“Today we have the largest satellite backhaul in Latin America to support the expansion of 4G from north to south of the country. We want to accompany Brazil in digital inclusion with the Sky Coverage project and for that we have important partners, such as Intelsat, with whom we work especially in the northern region”, Di Costanzo highlighted.

For his part, Ricardo La Guardia, Regional Vice President of Intelsat, pointed out: “The reliability of the Intelsat network and its great coverage will allow TIM to provide higher quality services to its clients in these regions of difficult access and connectivity, in order to comply with the business objectives of the company and respecting its environmental, social and governance initiatives.”

He recalled that the company is responsible for “cellular backhaul in countries around the world, with fully managed solutions such as CellBackhaul in Europe, DRC, the United States and Japan.”

Android 12, Google’s mobile operating system in its most recent version, incorporated a new optional function in its settings that allows users to disable connections through 2G data networks.

In the settings menu, users have a new section within the ‘Network and Internet’ and ‘SIM’ section, entitled ‘allow 2G’, with a button that allows you to enable or disable connectivity with these telephone networks launched in 1991.

Android informs that even if 2G connectivity is deactivated, this coverage will always be available for emergency calls.

Agencies say this feature is a “win” because it allows users to better protect themselves against a surveillance technique known as mobile site spoofing, often used by police to pinpoint the location of suspects.

When using 2G networks, an encryption system is used between the tower and the vulnerable device, since an attacker can intercept it in real time. In addition, the towers do not have to be authenticated, which allows their operation to be replicated.

As Nikkei has published, with this partnership, the company co-founded by Steve Jobs plans to adopt TSMC’s four-nanometer chip production technology to produce its first internal 5G modem chip and thus reduce its dependence on Qualcomm.

Last December, the company began developing its own modem for mobile phones in order to reduce dependence on Qualcomm, the supplier of these devices for the iPhone 12 and 13 series with 5G connectivity.

Since the beginning of 2021, processor manufacturers, such as the American Qualcomm, have been denouncing a global shortage of semiconductors, which depend mainly on Asian and Taiwanese companies, such as TSMC.

Own production

This agreement would give Apple some security to continue marketing its products without the need to depend on the company that until now was listed as the supplier of most of its components, which translates into greater control over its integration capacity of ‘hardware’.

According to what the aforementioned medium publishes, for the new iPhone 5G modem Apple is using the production of five nanometer (nm) chips from TSMC to design, test and produce what will be its own four nanometer SoC. According to Nikkei, it will not be commercialized until 2023.

As reported by the same media last July, iPad tablets will be the first to adopt TSMC’s three-nanometer technology. Nikkei has added that in the second half of 2022 Apple will use the four-nanometer technology from TSMC and not from Qualcomm, as before, for its iPhone processor.

It should be remembered that Apple acquired most of the business of modems for smartphones from Intel in mid-2019. This move was made known after the agreement reached between Qualcomm and the technology company by which the former agreed to provide its chips to Apple for six years.

According to what was expressed by Faria, in a statement issued by the government entity, the purpose is “to bring internet to rural areas and remote places“, through the Starlink system. It allows access to broadband internet through small antennas that are easily installed in difficult access areas traditional providers cannot reach.

For his part, the US businessman, Elon Musk, assured that they are “eager to be able to provide connectivity to the less connected.”

The Communications Minister also indicated that through this system they will be able to control and monitor the illegal logging and burning of forests in the Amazon region.
