This Thursday, February 11, the German car manufacturer Volkswagen and the American software giant Microsoft announced an alliance to develop a computer program for autonomous and connected driving.

With this union Volkswagen wants to achieve “a faster development of safe and comfortable mobility services”, according to a statement signed by Dirk Hilgenberg, head of the new software entity of the automotive group.

The German group, based in Wolfsburg, will take advantage of Microsoft services in cloud computing and artificial intelligence.

“This is the next step in our strategic partnership,” said Scott Guthrie, director of Microsoft. So far the financial conditions and duration of this new contract have not been disclosed. Volkswagen and Microsoft have been cooperating since 2018 to create a dematerialized platform for data exchange between connected vehicles.

Similarly, the first tests of a fleet of connected vehicles will be carried out this year 2021 and series production is scheduled for 2022, according to the statement.
