Meta could face a million-dollar fine if the instant messaging platform WhatsApp does not comply with the new Eropean regulations of the Digital Services Act within a period of four months.

In the past, Mark Zuckerberg has faced other legal proceedings in his relationship with the European Union. In fact, he had to pay a fine of 800 million euros due to his abuses of the Marketplace in the region. Currently, the EU accuses him of violating the new regulations of the Digital Services Act.

In this sense, the European Commission warned Meta of a period of four months for WhatsApp to begin moderating its content. The parent company has the obligation to design strategies to reduce the risks of spreading false information.

“The technology giant has the freedom to mitigate the risks, from creating a moderation system to adding new functions that allow users themselves to regulate activity in the messaging application,” the regulators have indicated.

On the other hand, WhatsApp must undergo an annual audit and comply with the recommendations it receives. Also, the platform “will be obliged to share its data with the European Commission and national authorities to assess whether they comply with the norm.”

Regarding the fines that the EU is considering, they are estimated at 6 % of annual turnover. For now, WhatsApp meets the requirements to be considered a VLOP, but must still wait for formal designation.
