Valentina Agudelo and Cristina García, from Colombia and Mexico, developed Soy Julieta, the breast cancer early detection device named in honor of Jilieta Lanteri, the first woman to vote in Argentina.

The desire to advance survival from this disease, which has undoubtedly advanced in recent decades, encouraged scientists to develop a new tool.

Soy Julieta will allow women, even in remote areas with difficult access to current medicine or high levels of poverty, reducing the waiting time, pain and radiation of current methods.

Mammography is the diagnostic method known until now. It is not an invasive technique, but it is painful. Although the radiation dose in the process is very low, it generates negative results in patients.

Soy Julieta, for its part, “is based on how breast tissue conducts electricity. Its two creators saw that tumor tissue and healthy tissue conduct it in a slightly different way. For this reason, they trained an artificial intelligence algorithm to differentiate healthy breasts from those that could have tumors.”

The algorithm was able to store data on disease-derived parameters to make a diagnosis of breast cancer with new tissue. The most important thing is that the device “is portable, with a rechargeable battery, and very easy to use. You just have to place it on your chest and the test is done automatically.”

The data taken by the patients themselves is uploaded to the cloud for subsequent analysis by a professional.

The device created by Valentina Agudelo and Cristina García has already been recognized with several awards, including the Global Awards and the Unlock Her Future 2024 Latam Edition Award.
