The team is led by researcher Jeong-Rang Kim of the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology, in collaboration with GS Engineering & Construction and Hanwha TotalEnergies.

Details indicate that this innovation “consists of a technology of catalysts and processes that allows for the direct conversion of CO2 and hydrogen into liquid fuels, without the need for complex intermediate stages.” For the first time, researchers have achieved a pilot production of 50 kilograms per day, a breakthrough that could usher in a new era in replacing petroleum derivatives and reducing industrial emissions.

This work is part of the Carbon Resource Platform Chemical project, spearheaded by South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT. Plans have progressed toward the construction of South Korea’s first pilot plant for direct CO2 hydrogenation, capable of producing 50 kilograms of liquid hydrocarbons per day, with commissioning scheduled for the end of 2025. In the short term, they expect to reach over 100,000 tons annually.

Ultimately, the goal is to partially replace imported fossil resources with alternatives derived from captured carbon.

It is known that a 15 % reduction target for carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions had been set for this year. Regarding the extension of the deadline, Brussels’ position was that it was unnecessary given that the countries in the region were aware of the schedule approved in 2019.

Sugar is an important source of energy for the human body and a key raw material for industrial fermentation, and is obtained mainly by extracting it from crops such as sugar cane. However, the traditional extraction method is limited by the energy conversion efficiency of plant photosynthesis. In addition, the sugar extraction process has been affected by an uncertain supply of raw materials due to land degradation and scarcity, ecosystem degradation, and extreme weather and natural disasters caused by global warming.

As a result, artificial sugar synthesis has been assiduously studied by the scientific community in recent years, and scientists from around the world have contributed to this effort, China Daily reports.

In their latest research, the Chinese scientists adjusted the high concentrations of carbon dioxide and other raw materials in the reaction solution according to certain proportions. With the help of chemical catalysts and enzyme catalysts, they obtained four types of sugars: glucose, allulose, tagatose, and mannose.

The experiment lasted about 17 hours, much less than the time required for traditional sugar extraction methods, according to Yang Jiangang, the paper’s lead author and a research associate at the Tianjin institute. The efficiency of sugar synthesis in this study was 0.67 grams per liter per hour, more than 10 times higher than previous results achieved by scientists around the world.

Yang said the rate of conversion of carbon dioxide to sugar from glucose reached 59.8 nanomoles of carbon per milligram of catalyst per minute. This is the highest level of artificial sugar production known nationally and internationally.

The study, published in the Chinese Science Bulletin, also achieved precise control of artificial sugar synthesis. “By controlling the various catalytic effects of different enzymes, almost any type of sugar can theoretically be synthesized,” Yang said.

The conversion of carbon dioxide to sugar is considered an example of green chemistry, since it was carried out under normal conditions of temperature and pressure and did not produce any harmful substances.

The fight to minimize emissions of carbon dioxide into the environment by the tourism industry has led companies linked to this sector to invest in new technologies, initiatives that help reduce the emission of pollutants and allow increased traveler engagement.

Google Travel has made new search tools available to the public that direct them to select more sustainable trips. This means that the lists of options when searching for a train company or a hotel will show if they are “zero emissions” or close to it.

When doing the search, the “Emissions” filter is activated, which strategically groups offers with low emissions. According to the publication on the official Google blog, the filter applies to hotels, directing the client towards those with an ecological certificate.

In Europe, specifically in Spain, Italy and Germany, the direct purchase option of the train ticket through the Google search engine is now available. These nations are joined by Japan, in Asia, where it is also possible to purchase the train ticket.

The purpose of creating the six consortiums is to contribute to the promotion and development of technologies that eliminate or discard “carbon in the value chain of cement and concrete”.

The expected methodology is that each consortium will be made up of an “emerging company with its respective pioneering technology, in which from 3 to 8 cement companies from GCCA will participate.

The goals set by GCCA officials is to go from having dozens of pilot projects and announcements already underway to having 10 industrial-scale carbon capture plants by 2030, as part of the historic Net Zero Roadmap, announced in October 2021.

Emerging sustainable technologies

The startups were selected from more than 100 that participated in the Open Challenge, hailing from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy and the Netherlands. From now on, these companies, together with global cement companies, will continue “testing, developing and implementing their innovative technologies”.

The company Carbon Upcycling Technologies and Fortera will be in charge of manipulating CO2 to manufacture cement and cement-derived materials with low carbon emissions. While Coomtech is advancing a low-cost drying technology that uses the kinetic energy created by managing turbulent air.

On the other hand, CarbonOro, MOF Technologies and Saipem will delve into the technology on the implementation of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS).

The system is already working properly autonomously, without depending on the electrical network, offering backup between 8 to 12 hours of energy that guarantees the continuity of all Digitel network services, including points of sale.

With this solution, the company makes the most of renewable energy sources since it achieves “savings in CO2 emissions due to solar contribution is 6.5 tons per year” resulting positively in the environment.

With these facilities, the telecommunications company continues to innovate in the sector to provide new opportunities in the development and expansion of services, especially in remote areas with difficult access.

Environmentally friendly technology

The president of the company, Luis Bernardo Pérez, expressed “we continue advancing with a technology that is friendly to the environment, renewable, low-maintenance and low-cost. We started with solar panels in Cuyagua and now we place them in Los Roques, giving continuity to an effort that represents progress and the future for telecommunications”.

According to the information provided by the operator, the installed solution is made up of “photovoltaic modules, batteries and a power conversion system”, with which the company can continue to provide “services in the area even without electricity and open new possibilities to the sector”.

According to Pérez, the use of solar panels in the telecommunications sector, in urban areas, will generate great benefits in the future because they are easy to install since space can be optimized (roof of booths).

On the other hand, it requires little or no use of diesel and the “cost of acquiring, installing and maintaining the solution is lower compared to other backup options when it is installed over time, since it considerably minimizes operating expenses.” Said the president of the company.

One of the reasons, he pointed out, is the high demand for electric models. “Our i4 has been sold for months now, as has the iX,” Zipse said. “Next year the electric seventh will be no different,”. However, admitted the president of BMW, the lack of charging stations constitutes a brake. “In Europe, the number of electric cars is currently growing five times faster than infrastructure.”

For that reason, he also said he was against banning internal combustion engines: “That would inevitably lead Germany’s largest industry into a contraction scenario.” Zipse called for CO2 targets to be tied to binding targets for charging infrastructure.

Meanwhile, he estimated that the lack of semiconductors could have come to an end within a year thanks to the investments of the car manufacturers themselves: “I hope that by the end of next year we will have a practically normal situation.“

The results of the report show that a transaction with bitcoin requires “1,173 kilowatt hours of electricity”, an amount with which a home in the United Kingdom can be supplied for more than three months or six weeks in the United States.

When performing the calculations with other cryptocurrencies with the highest demand in the market, the following results were obtained: Ethereum 87.29 kWh; Bitcoin Cash 18,957 kWh; Litecoin 18,522 kWh; Cardano 0.547 kWh; Dogecoin 0.12 kWh; XRP 0.0079 kWh.

According to the number of transactions carried out with bitcoin during a year, an approximate consumption of “123 terawatt hours or 123 billion kWh was determined. While Ethereum consumed 39.19 terawatts and cardano only 0.01 terawatts. These figures reflect that the energy consumption required by bitcoin is higher than that used by 185 countries and comparable to the annual energy consumption in Norway.

The report also presented the calculations made in money. That is, they took the world average price per kWh, which stood at 9.0 cents on the dollar and determined that each bitcoin transaction has a value of $ 173. While Ethereum transactions amounts to $ 12.92; Bitcoin Cash $ 2.81; Litecoin $ 2.74; Cardano $ 0.08; Dogecoin $ 0.02 and XRP $ 0.001.

Energy consumption of NFTs

The report also dedicates a section to determining the amount of power required by NFTs, noting that most transactions are executed on the ethereum blockchain and although it could be assumed that an “NFT transaction would use the same amount of power as an ethereum transaction”. However, the research determined that it is not that simple because “each step of the cycle requires energy.”

The document indicates that the average electricity consumption of an NFT is about 340 kWh “and leaves a carbon footprint of 241 kgCO2”. When making the estimates with the total amount of registered sales of the NFTs in the last 12 months, they found that the cost of each NFT is equivalent to 50.32 dollars.

The event – which combines the physical and digital format – has aroused the interest of more than 2,000 professionals, which “demonstrates the importance at this time of digitization as a driver to achieve energy efficiency and sustainability”, according to the organizers.

‘Technology for a green and digital revolution‘ is the theme chosen for this edition, which will analyze the role of digitization to improve energy efficiency as a “lever to achieve the objectives of reducing CO2 emissions, sustainability and climate change” included in the European funds and in the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan of the Government of Spain.

Therefore, the current energy context, the EU’s Horizon 2030 and SDG sustainability objectives, as well as the Next Generation EU funds will be the protagonists of an event that also tries to promote co-innovation, the startup ecosystem, public-private collaboration as other drivers to achieve sustainability.

Networking expo area

In order to strengthen relationships and get to know the main players in the technology and energy industry, detect opportunities or share experiences, the congress includes an EXPO Networking Zone of more than 2,500 square meters.

Regarding the conference program, in which about 150 experts will participate, there will be three types of auditoriums (Auditorium Technological Vision, Auditorium Strategic Vision and Auditorium Innovation Vision), specialized sessions in Intelligent Energy & Utilities; Intelligent Industries & Mobility; Intelligent IT Infrastructure & Data Center; and Intelligent Territories & Cities.

This was reported by the German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). This is the highest number recorded by this nation in the last 28 years. In December 1993, according to historical data, the prices of products and services stood at 4.3 percent.
Destatis pointed out that the figure is supported by provisional data, but in two weeks it will be published in a final report where a detailed breakdown of the different categories that impacted the increase in August.

“The rise has a number of reasons, including the base effect of the low prices in 2020. The temporary lowering of VAT and the fall in fossil fuel prices are particularly affected here,” Destatis said.

As you will recall, Germany applied a 3-point reduction in VAT in the last half of last year as a strategy to boost consumption in the population, after the first wave of the coronavirus, causing an acceleration in prices in 2021 Additionally, the consequences of the introduction of the CO2 tax equivalent to 25 euros per ton, which came into effect on January 1st of this year, must be incorporated.

The increase in the price of energy, which stood at 12.6 % year-on-year in August, can be considered as one of the factors that help explain the rise in inflation. Some analysts estimate that this increase in the cost of living should be a transitory phenomenon. “Monthly inflation for August was 0.1 %.”

In the last eight months, the behavior of inflation has been showing an upward trend. “The consumer price index (CPI) rose 1.0 % in January, 1.3 % in February, 1.7 in March, 2.0 in April, 2, 5 in May, 2.3 in June and 3.8 % in July.”
