By 2027, the number of AI-powered bots browsing the web will exceed the number of human users, according to a projection by Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince.

The executive stated this during an interview at the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas. Prince noted that “bot traffic on websites is expanding as the use of generative AI advances. Specifically, because these bots are able to visit more pages to gather information and respond to user queries.”

The CEO of Cloudflare indicated that if a user wants to buy a product themselves, they will make a limited number of searches on their chosen websites. However, if they ask “a chatbot like ChatGPT to search for that product and similar ones, the bot will analyze thousands of web pages to find it.”

He added that while bot traffic on the internet was 20 % before the rise of generative AI, “the trend indicates that the number of bots will surpass humans in a couple of years.”

Taking this data into account, the CEO predicts that next year online bot traffic will exceed the amount of human online traffic, which could become a problem for website servers.

Faced with a potential scenario of a surge in chatbots navigating the web, Prince emphasizes the “need to develop new technologies with isolated environments for AI agents.” It proposes the development of a new underlying infrastructure “that allows, with the same ease as opening a new browser tab, the execution of new code that can then function and provide services to existing agents.”

Microsoft and Cloudflare have teamed up to develop a new privacy tool, a virtual private network (VPN) that will be integrated into the Edge browser to protect user browsing online.

Microsoft Edge Secure Network is the name of the new VPN that will be integrated into Microsoft’s browser to protect both the device from which the user connects and sensitive data while browsing networks that “are not secure enough”.

This VPN encrypts the connection to offer a secure network even when using a url that begins with ‘HTTP’, as explained on the Microsoft Support page. This prevents malicious hackers from accessing your browsing data and your internet service provider from collecting your browsing data.

Likewise, and as detailed by the company, the new Edge tool generates a virtual IP address that masks the user’s IP and replaces their geolocation with a similar regional address to make tracking difficult.

This tool is being developed by Cloudflare and is currently in the preview phase, as listed on the Microsoft Support page. To use it, you will need to log in with a Microsoft account, and it will offer 1GB of free data every month.
