The executive stated this during an interview at the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas. Prince noted that “bot traffic on websites is expanding as the use of generative AI advances. Specifically, because these bots are able to visit more pages to gather information and respond to user queries.”

The CEO of Cloudflare indicated that if a user wants to buy a product themselves, they will make a limited number of searches on their chosen websites. However, if they ask “a chatbot like ChatGPT to search for that product and similar ones, the bot will analyze thousands of web pages to find it.”

He added that while bot traffic on the internet was 20 % before the rise of generative AI, “the trend indicates that the number of bots will surpass humans in a couple of years.”

Taking this data into account, the CEO predicts that next year online bot traffic will exceed the amount of human online traffic, which could become a problem for website servers.

Faced with a potential scenario of a surge in chatbots navigating the web, Prince emphasizes the “need to develop new technologies with isolated environments for AI agents.” It proposes the development of a new underlying infrastructure “that allows, with the same ease as opening a new browser tab, the execution of new code that can then function and provide services to existing agents.”

Users reported being unable to access the social network X, in particular, as well as a wide range of cryptocurrency sites, finance and ChatGPT websites, starting early Tuesday morning.

Improving security

In this regard, the platform announced plans to “strengthen security in the processing of its own configuration files, treating them with the same caution as user-generated input.” It also noted the implementation of “more global kill switches for its features, allowing for rapid deactivation in case of emergencies.”

Decentralization and contingency plans

(Reference image source: Growtika on Unsplash)

Some experts go further and propose, as preventative measures, “protocols and platforms that don’t rely so heavily on centralized DNS or one-way routing; regulations that treat the cloud as critical infrastructure and require contingency plans and transparency in post-mortem reports.” They add an aspect they consider the most difficult to implement: “a cultural shift in companies and technical teams moving away from viewing resilience as a luxury and placing it at the heart of the design,” as reported by El Economista.

What can users do?

Regarding this topic, BloombergLinea refers to problems that can affect users when challenges.cloudflare.com identifies them as bots and blocks access to the website. In such cases, the first recommendation would be to check that JavaScript is enabled for the challenges.cloudflare.com domain. Secondly, disable script blockers used to improve security, privacy, and loading speed. Third, a reputable public DNS server could be used to test whether it allows loading from challenges.cloudflare.com.

The company, “specializing in web security and performance,” implemented the measure in response to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) crawlers. In this regard, “from now on, these bots that collect information from websites to train AI models are blocked by default, unless the website owners give explicit permission,” as reported by CNBC.

With this payment plan, Cloudflare makes clear its goal of protecting its users from the “unauthorized” use of its content by technology companies that train AI systems. In this regard, the platform “also began asking new customers whether they want to allow these trackers to access their sites.”

Cloudflare’s pilot program “allows certain media outlets and platforms to charge for access to their content. With this model, publishers can set a price and decide which types of AI companies can pay to use their content. Interested companies can view the rates and choose whether to accept.”

Participants in the pilot project include The Associated Press, Time, The Atlantic, BuzzFeed, Reddit, Sky News, Pinterest, among others.

Microsoft Edge Secure Network is the name of the new VPN that will be integrated into Microsoft’s browser to protect both the device from which the user connects and sensitive data while browsing networks that “are not secure enough”.

This VPN encrypts the connection to offer a secure network even when using a url that begins with ‘HTTP’, as explained on the Microsoft Support page. This prevents malicious hackers from accessing your browsing data and your internet service provider from collecting your browsing data.

Likewise, and as detailed by the company, the new Edge tool generates a virtual IP address that masks the user’s IP and replaces their geolocation with a similar regional address to make tracking difficult.

This tool is being developed by Cloudflare and is currently in the preview phase, as listed on the Microsoft Support page. To use it, you will need to log in with a Microsoft account, and it will offer 1GB of free data every month.
