“Its full name is the El Niño-Southern Oscillation phenomenon, known as ENSO. This is a cycle with three phases: La Niña, associated with cold periods depending on the region of the world; El Niño, which translates into high temperatures; and the neutral phase, which is currently in effect,” according to meteorological centers.

Regarding El Niño, it “is triggered when the trade winds weaken, allowing the Pacific Ocean surface to warm unusually. This also reverses atmospheric pressure between the eastern and western hemispheres in the tropics.”

Data from 2024 regarding the El Niño phenomenon indicates that its magnitude ranged from moderate to strong. If its effect is more powerful in 2026, it could break a new global temperature record. In fact, estimates indicate that if the temperature increase does not occur this year, it will happen in 2027.

In any case, experiences have shown high temperatures and heavy rainfall, making proactive strategies pertinent. Some nations are already considering water storage as a responsible measure to supply the population and industry.

This is a legitimate concern, given the effects of El Niño in reducing water availability, increasing pressure on the electrical grid, and impacting productive sectors.

These characteristics accelerate the discussion of contingency plans, including conservation, consumption review, and review of available storage tanks.

IPCC experts have pointed out that large areas of Latin America and the Caribbean are highly exposed to the impacts of climate change, a situation that is aggravated by inequality, poverty, disorderly population growth and high population density.

“As regions, we suffer from high levels of poverty and lack institutional structures, which makes us especially vulnerable to climate change,” said Paola Arias, a researcher at the IPCC.

The effects of climate change vary in each country in the region. “We are witnessing an increase in extreme precipitation in nations such as Paraguay and Argentina; other areas are becoming drier, such as certain regions of Chile and Brazil; the sea level is rising in coastal areas, and it is estimated that the glaciers of Colombia will disappear in the coming decades,” explained the expert.

Latin America is severely affected by climate change

Susana Muhamad, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development of Colombia, highlighted that Latin America is considered one of the regions with the greatest human vulnerability in the world, which results in more serious consequences of climate change compared to other parts of the planet.

Ella Muhamad advocated for the implementation of a climate monitoring project for Latin America, as governments have so far failed to carry out proper monitoring, which has led to a lack of data and scientific publications on the risks of climate change.

The Minister emphasized the need to make a significant investment to address prevention, responding to scientific warnings, and also highlighted the importance of strengthening institutions to be able to negotiate internationally with other countries.

Along the same lines, Thelma Krug, Vice President of the IPCC, urged governments to compile reports to systematically assess the situation in Central and South America, in order to better understand what is happening in a region that is lagging behind in terms of data monitoring in comparison with Africa or Asia.

However, Muhamad clarified that Latin America is not one of the main emitters of greenhouse gases and that its role should focus on vigorously demanding that the most industrialized countries reduce their emissions.

Over the next few days, presentations and roundtables will be held between expert organizations with the aim of developing measures to combat climate change in these regions.

The company made this announcement through its main portal, where it explained that it will support research focused on determining contamination levels of cryptocurrencies, renewable energies, and energy generation processes.

As is well known, there are various investigations with antagonistic positions on the impact of Bitcoin mining on the environment. A study called “Bitcoin Net Zero” concluded that bitcoin “does not represent any kind of threat to the ecosystem and that the electricity consumption of its network is very low compared to other sectors.”

For its part, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that “disturbing” results have been produced in the levels of contamination produced by Bitcoin mining.

Pillars of research

Bitmain in its announcement explained the 4 pillars on which it structures the investigations. The first refers to the need to verify the real levels of contamination from bitcoin mining, which could be achieved by analyzing, identifying and measuring the carbon footprint produced by the industry.

The second investigation will focus on “how Bitcoin is promoting the use of renewable energy for mining” in order to meet the goal of “100 % green mining with zero emissions” that the Bitmain company is proposing.

The third pillar will be based on “how bitcoin is optimizing energy generation processes” or smart energy. This study aims to analyze the efforts that governments and private organizations have been making in the development of innovative electricity generation technologies for Bitcoin mining and the advantages that the sector is imparting to the activity.

Finally, the company plans to carry out a sustainability study, which will focus on “how companies in the Bitcoin field have committed to achieving the goal of Zero Emissions promoted by the United Nations Organization (UN) for the year 2050”.

The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, pointed out that Spain has joined the initiative promoted by the United States, which currently brings together 40 states, which is called the ‘Mission of Agricultural Innovation for the Climate’ and that It aims to “develop public investment and private participation in all the objectives in terms of increasing food production and at the same time climate sustainability.”

Speaking to journalists in Córdoba before the closing of the ‘Earth Day’ event, organized by the University of Córdoba, the United States Embassy and the company Valmont Industries, dedicated to irrigation technology, Planas explained that a few days ago, he communicated this to the United States ambassador to Spain and Andorra, Julissa Reynoso, so that she could pass it on to his government and to the Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, with whom he had “a very productive and interesting meeting a few days ago months”.

In this sense, the head of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of the Spanish Executive stressed: “We must be very clear that this is the only planet we have, that there is no planet B” and “in these conditions we must fully ensure that production and needs at a time as difficult as the one we are experiencing right now and with the suffering that many people are having in Europe with the Russian invasion of Ukraine and all the consequences, human and economic.” In this connection, Planas has called for “joining all efforts to produce the necessary food for humanity in the necessary way.”

Efficient irrigation to maximize water

The minister assured that irrigation is “the jewel in the crown of Spanish agriculture, the spearhead of a modern and competitive sector, which offers opportunities for rural areas”. In fact, with only a quarter of the cultivated area, irrigation contributes two thirds of the value of agricultural production in Spain.

Planas stressed that “the Government is committed to efficient irrigation to get the most out of every drop of water, especially in a context of climate change, in which it is necessary to produce more with less.” As he has pointed out, “irrigation allows agricultural productivity to be multiplied by six, increases up to four times the income of farmers and generates three times more employment.”

Given this, he has expressed the need “to continue investing to produce more food using fewer resources, in the context of a more competitive, profitable and sustainable agriculture.”

In his intervention, he mentioned that “Spain is the leader in the European Union in irrigated area, with more than 3.8 million hectares, and the first in the world in localized irrigation area”. In this area, he praised that “Andalusia has the largest irrigated area in Spain, with around one million hectares, and also the most efficient, with 78% localized irrigation.”

Looking to the future, the effects of climate change together with the need to increase food production make it necessary to take measures to improve the efficiency in the use of water, fertilizers, energy and phytosanitary products. For this reason, the minister considers “essential to continue modernizing and digitizing irrigation, through new technologies and renewable energies, a task that constitutes one of the Government’s great commitments, for which significant investments are allocated”.

“The biggest obstacles to renewable energy expansion so far are a lack of land, lengthy planning and approval procedures, and a lack of skilled workers. However, apart from offshore wind, there are few solutions to these problems in the world in the package” launched by the Government.

Without further changes to parliamentary procedure, it will be difficult to reach the target of 80 percent green electricity by 2030, according to Adrian, who claimed that other obstacles to expansion would have to be resolved.

The DIHK president also regretted that, from the point of view of many companies, it is completely incomprehensible that the expansion of renewable energy through direct supply contracts has been left out of the legislative initiative.

Measures to strengthen green energy

The German Cabinet launched a series of measures baptized on the proposal of the Minister of Economy and Climate Protection, the environmentalist Robert Habeck, with the aim of massively accelerating the expansion of green electricity, from wind and solar sources, in Germany.

Adrian said that, especially in the case of solar power plants, there are still numerous bureaucratic requirements that hold back expansion. “This includes, for example, that the sharing of solar energy in industrial areas is hampered by legal regulations.”

“At the same time, companies are increasingly showing great interest in investing in renewable power plants or buying this electricity through direct supply contracts,” he added.

Companies would thus have the opportunity to protect themselves against rising electricity prices, he stressed. “The last few weeks have shown how important this is.”

The resources will be allocated to items for the protection and restoration of ecosystems and their biodiversity, as well as the reduction of pollution.

The multilateral organization has indicated that all its loans and projects will be fully aligned with the Paris climate agreement by 2023, a measure that will help the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean to combat climate change and at the same time, advance in the steps to help the most vulnerable populations with a sustainable recovery for all.

The announcement comes as world leaders are meeting at COP26, the UN’s annual conference on climate change, to seek ways to slow global warming and achieve the climate goals agreed at a previous summit in Paris.

“We know that by prioritizing smart investments today, the cornerstone of our global fight against climate change can mutually reinforce our pandemic recovery efforts and we can accelerate our response,” said IDB President Mauricio Claver-Carone.

These projects leveraged an additional $ 437 million in partner funding, for a total of approximately $ 1.25 billion.

The announcement adds to the IDB’s efforts to integrate climate considerations and financing into the agendas and policies of its borrowing member countries. By the end of 2021, at least 75 % of the bank’s regional member countries will have submitted their updated nationally determined contributions, in many cases with IDB support.

These results are reflected in the number of employees, which currently stands at an average of 18 per company, four more than a year ago. According to the report, the firms also want to hire more staff than before.

The data collected indicates that the proportion of women is also growing, although at just under 18 % it continues to be very low. More than a fifth, it means 22 %, of the founders of these startups have foreign origins.

“The study shows that our startup ecosystem is on the right track in terms of growth and diversity,” said the association’s executive director, Franziska Teubert.

“In view of international competition, things have to move much faster in both areas,” she said.

The new digital companies consider that their main obstacles are, in addition to the search for talent, obtaining capital and access to data.
