There will be changes so that the sessions are more private and personal, as indicated by Google, since they have given a new direction to the topic due to complaints from advertisers.

The argument is that if they are eliminated, it would be “more difficult to reach the client with the thoroughness they enjoyed until now.”

For now, the cookies will remain, but there will be new features “so that users can make their own decisions when it comes to managing third-party cookies, which means that a new configuration menu will be released that will allow them to improve the user experience. a more appropriate cookie profile for each user.”

Google will offer the option to deactivate them totally or partially according to personal preferences from a new configuration menu, thereby adjusting to the authorities’ demands regarding transparency.

The decision has been agreed with the regulators, “who are aware of the changes that Google is introducing in Chrome to improve privacy regarding the use of third-party cookies.”

Cybersecurity researchers have unveiled malicious campaigns that release the AMOS (Atomic Stealer) malware by downloading fraudulent Chrome and Safari updates.

One of the most efficient ways for hackers to trap victims is through false advertising. They use it to gain the customer’s trust, make them download a fake update, and take over their data.

Atomic Stealer, also known as AMOS, is a malware that has returned to digital scenarios through these malicious Chrome and Safari updates for MacOS computers.

In September, cybersecurity experts noticed its reappearance, camouflaged in malicious advertising. But before, in April, it was used in an attack focused on cryptocurrencies.

Social engineering campaigns allow attackers to achieve their objectives. This is the case of Clearfacke, according to reports from Malwarebytes, “which takes advantage of compromised websites to distribute false Safari and Chrome updates for MacOS.”

When the user downloads the update, they receive a request to open the files through which the commands are activated to “steal data and send it to a server controlled by the malicious actor.”

The company made its bid for the elimination of passwords known a few months ago, when it said it was paving the way for a system based on ‘passwords’ based on the proposals of the FIDO (Fast Identity Online) Alliance.

This alliance, to which some of the most important technology companies belong, seeks to create new secure standards for the management of digital services and plans to abandon traditional systems, such as passwords or two-factor authentication.

Thus, it proposes a system of private keys or ‘passkeys’ that are linked to users’ personal accounts and that can be synchronized between devices for use on websites through Google’s Password Manager.

Google has announced that this system is now available in Android and Chrome, which offer support for access keys and that they represent “a significantly more secure replacement for passwords and other fraudulent authentication factors”, as indicated in its blog for developers.

Access without Google passwords

This new passwordless login system will be coming to stable channels later this year. As the company has explained, to create an access key, the user must confirm the access account information (with associated username or email). Next, you have to use a biometric recognition system.

Thus, the owners of these accounts can choose between the fingerprint, opt for facial recognition or simply the screen unlock key of the terminal. Therefore, to log in, they will only need to indicate the user and add their private ‘passkey’.

In case they want to access a certain account from a computer, they can do it as long as they have their mobile phone nearby. That way, a user with an Android device can log in to their account from the Mac’s browser, Safari, just like an iPhone owner can log into Chrome with the password saved in iOS.

Therefore, when trying to access an account from the computer, the website will generate a QR code, which the user must scan with their mobile phone. Next, you will need to include your key (unlock PIN, fingerprint or facial recognition) to use your account on that website.

Consistent user experience

Google has stressed that since the access keys are based on industry standards, this system works across platforms and browsers in order to provide a consistent user experience. These include Windows, macOS, iOS, and ChromeOS.

Also, the manufacturer has indicated that developers can now create applications for Android or Chrome websites compatible with access keys through the WebAuthn API. To do this, they must sign up for the beta version of Google Play Services and use Chrome Canary.

Finally, he has said that he will continue working on new access formats without passwords and that from next year he will introduce new changes in Android.

It should be remembered that Apple also announced this summer that it would introduce a new authentication functionality on iPhone, iPad and Mac with which you could log in to compatible websites using TouchID or FaceID.

Then he said that Passkeys would arrive at the end of the year to these devices with a preview, within the iCloud keychain, intended for passwords and security on the brand’s equipment.

The new tool will bounce inappropriate notifications, with or without users’ prior authorization to receive them.

With this new feature introduced in Chrome 86, it focuses on the content of notifications and is activated on pages that have a history of sending messages with abusive content.

The feature is currently available as a “flag” on a test basis in the “Chromium repository, but it already offers a stricter approach to such items than the current Chrome feature.”

As you may remember, Google had incorporated the Chrome 80 silent user interface of the notification permission, which underwent changes with version 84 and with which the “browser company announced the automatic enrollment in the silent notification UI for websites with requests for abusive notifications.”

With version 86 the browser, in a pop-up window, shows the message that indicates the blocking of notifications “because the site “could track the user if it allows intrusive notifications”.

According to the developers of the different brands, the update of the next version of the browsers, which will be available in March for Google Chrome and Edge, while the one for Firefox will be released in May, could affect the income of some pages because “they are not ready to read three-digit user agent strings, similar to what happened when browsers reached two-digit versions more than a decade ago.”

The companies behind Google, Microsoft and Mozilla browsers are currently working hard solve the failures that millions of users may present with the new three-digit update.

Browsers work to fix bugs

The developers are designing various strategies, among which stands our the activation of a specific tag in the current versions of the browsers that allows a simulation of the next update in order to approve different websites and their reaction to the three-digit encoding.

The company that supports Mozilla plans to correct the faults once they appear when accessing the different websites. But, if they cannot solve it, they plan to use a strategy similar to that proposed by Google, which consists of freezing version 99 of the browser.

The reports generated so far indicate that the sites with the highest user traffic that experience compatibility difficulties are HBO Go, Bethesda and Yahoo. Therefore, the companies are asking users who want to help mitigate the “possible consequences to configure their browsers with the special tag and report any problems with their performance.”

Google expanded the methods that allow user authentication to a company account in a two-factor system by using the Chrome browser when logging in to a computer.

The two-step verification (2VS) or two-factor authentication (2AF) system requires an additional item after the password to confirm that the user is the one who is trying to log into their Google account.

This second factor can be a pop-up window, in which the user must indicate that it is him with the corresponding button, or press a linked security key (external hardware) for several seconds.

The technology company began to distribute another option: that the Chrome browser app for Android acts as a security key from the mobile when trying to log in to a computer, as reported by 9to5Google.

When the user enters their Google account email and password on a computer, they will see a new notification on the phone asking if they are trying to access and notifying them that someone is trying to log in from a nearby device .

From the aforementioned portal they point out that after confirming, a screen appears with a padlock surrounded by a circle with the corporate color that indicates that it is connected to the device, as is the case with the process that follows with a security key physical.

The GPC has been activated by default this Thursday for the DuckDuckGo mobile applications on iOS and Android, and for the desktop extensions in the Chrome, Firefox and Edge browsers, as the company reported in a publication on its official website.

As you explain, GPC is a browser or device setting that, when enabled, indicates to all visited websites a preference for privacy.

This setup follows the announcement made a few months ago by DuckDuckGo as a founding member of the GPC standard.

The measure will provide additional legal protection in certain jurisdictions for situations in which websites could sell or share the data with other companies, such as advertisers or intermediaries, after the user’s visit.
