Apple could change the way it names its iOS and macOS operating systems, according to leaked data, moving from the numerical sequence to which users are accustomed, adding the number 26 to updates.

According to specialist journalist Mark Gurman, the technology company is considering implementing “a new naming convention for its operating systems, aligning them with the year of release.”

That is, next year, 2026, the following versions of its products would start being called iOS 26, macOS 26, iPadOS 26, instead of following the current sequential numbering. And it’s not just a cosmetic change; it’s about unifying the user experience, making it easier to identify devices by release year.

These changes may be announced by Apple during the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025, scheduled for Monday, June 9.
